When we get back to the table, Yvette is standing and pulling her purse strap over her shoulder. “I gotta go. The last bus to my place comes in five minutes.”

Thank goodness.

“I can drive you home,” Parker offers.

“No way,” Yvette replies. “My dad will go ballistic if he sees me getting out of a boy’s car. I promised to take a break from dating.”

Parker smirks. “I’m not your boyfriend.”

Yvette chews on a fingernail. “They won’t believe that.”

Parker slicks his hair back. “Because I’m so irresistible?”

“No, because I’m never single,” Yvette replies. She leans over to peck Lewis’s lips. “Call me when you get home.”

He cups the sides of her face, kissing her with extra effort. “I will.”

Parker motions at Lewis. “You’re not going with her?”

“There’s no connecting bus from her stop to my place in the evenings,” Lewis replies. “Is it cool if I hitch a ride with you?”

“Yeah, I’m already driving to your neighbor’s house.”

“If Yvie’s going home, can we head off too?” I ask, pivoting between the boys. “I’m beat.”

Lewis stands, grinning. “I’ve no doubt, daredevil.”

I blush and mumble a laugh.

“Did I miss something?” Parker asks.

“Just something me and your girlfriend we’re chatting about earlier,” Lewis teases. He slings an arm around Yvette, leaving the table before us.

Parker sends me a wink and I let the good feelings bubble inside me.

We wait for Yvette’s bus and try not to look when the two cuddle and kiss, dragging out their goodbyes.

Parker breaks before I do. He turns around and says, “You want us to leave you behind, Lewy?”

Yvette finally relents and boards the bus.

Lewis jogs our way. “Coming.”

Thankfully, driving by car is much faster than by bus. Although, I wouldn’t have minded if Lewis and I had to take a long bus ride home together.

As he drives past Main Street, Parker plucks my hand from my lap and intertwines our fingers. I smile as we hold hands above the center console. I can’t help thinking about Lewis watching this and maybe—just maybe—he’ll be jealous.

After parking in front of my house, Parker kisses my hand.

“Thanks for tonight,” I say, opening the car door.

“Give Brandy a hug from me,” Parker says, waving goodbye.

I smile, closing the door. “Will do.”

Parker drives away, and Lewis and I move off the curb.

“Brandy?” Lewis questions.
