“My dog. She and Parker have bonded.”

“Oh, that’s awesome. He was really cut up when his dog passed away.”

“Yeah, he told me. I couldn’t even imagine.”

He slings his hands in his pockets. “So, tonight was fun.”

“Yeah, it was.”

“I got a text from Kai while we were driving back. We’re gonna meet up tomorrow at Morton’s Café.”

A thrill jumpstarts my heart. “Cool. I’m working tomorrow morning.”

“Nice. Kai’s bringing Tabby and I texted Yvie to come along. We’re trying to help the girls make up so it’s not so awkward when we hang out.”

I trip on the cement path, catching myself before I fall.

Lewis clutches my arm. “You okay?”

I blush. “Yeah. Thanks.”

He lets me go. “It’s cool you and Yvie are hanging out, but I think she really misses Tabitha.”

“Mm-hmm.”

“Anyway, I’ll see you tomorrow when I order an extra-large pancake stack.”

I fake a smile and wave. “See you then.”

He waves, and moves over to his yard.

Even though I’ve collapsed into a hunch, I speed toward the front door. When I get inside, I rest against the back of the door and pull out my phone.

I text Parker,“You have to come to the café tomorrow morning.”

My fingers tap along the sides of the phone, impatiently waiting for his reply. I remind myself he’s driving home, and pull myself off the door.

“Kikki?” Dad asks, moving out of the living room. “Hi, honey. How was your night out?”

“It was good. The burger was incredible as per usual.”

“Good to hear. And Parker? Was he a gentleman?”

A shiver runs down my spine as our kiss on the deck replays in my mind. I shake out of the thought and find a smile on my face.

“Yes, of course.”

Dad beams. “Oh, Kikki, you look so happy.”

I move in for one of Dad’s bear hugs. “I am, it’s just...”

Dad pulls me into his arms, waiting for me to continue. I lean my head against him, leaving the unfinished sentence to linger.

“What is it, honey?”

I sigh. “Everything’s fine with Parker. It was the other couple that put a hitch in the night.”

Dad unravels his arms, looking down as I lift my head. “Tell me what happened.”
