She glanced at Laura, but gave away nothing in her expression. “What happened? Did he smash your head in?” Rae nodded to the bandaid on Laura’s head.
“Uh—actually,” I laughed. “Funny story?—”
“He did, didn’t he?” Rae cut me off. “Typical man. You were supposed to be here four hours ago. I had to call Cotton to help me complete the weekly systems checks.”
“Cotton’s here?” I asked, my mood picking up.
“Yeah, not that he’ll talk to you. And this shouldn’t help the situation.”
“Well, I was at the hospital,” I shot back. “As it turns out, my woman is pregnant,” I said with a grin on my face.
“Oh!” Rae clapped, a huge smile spreading across her face. “That’s so amazing. I had no idea you were trying!”
“We weren’t!” I laughed.
“It’s so exciting that you accidentally knocked her up,” Rae gushed, completely unlike her. “I mean…I have no words to express how few fucks I give that you were late because you knocked up your girlfriend!”
And…there it was.
“You know, you could try to be happy.”
“I could, but that would imply that I give a shit about how incompetent you are in the bedroom.”
“If I were incompetent, would I have gotten her pregnant?”
A slow smirk spread across her face as she crossed her arms over her chest. “I think I’ve made my point.”
I hated that she got under my skin like this. I wrapped my hand around Laura’s and led her down the hall to the IT room, eager to continue patching things up with Cotton. And I had a feeling Laura would be able to help me with that. It was impossible not to like her.
“I still can’t wrap my brain around the fact that you work here,” Laura murmured as we walked through the hallway. “I thought you were in construction.”
“Did you like me better when you thought that?” I asked, not really wanting to hear the answer.
“Well, I did see you in action and that was kind of hot.” I could hear the grin in her voice without even looking at her face.
“That wasn’t me in action. That was only a small dose of what it’s like.”
“And how exactly would I see the real thing?”
I paused in the hallway, turning to face her. A rosy glow lit her cheeks as she ducked her head, refusing to meet my eyes. She was turned on by all this. Damn, if only I had known that sooner.
“So, you like this?”
Her eyes flitted around us as she looked for any prying ears. “Um…I wouldn’t mind seeing you in…your work ensemble.”
“My tactical gear,” I grinned. “You want to see my gun again.”
“Maybe.” She bit her lips, digging her teeth into her plump lowerlip, making my dick instantly hard. But then again, I was always hard around her. I was going to have to learn to control that, not that I’d had much luck so far.
