PROLOGUE

Two Months Ago . . .

Oakleigh

I thought coming here was going to be amazing.

The plan was I’d see my father and my aunt Jada and get away from all the chaos and drama back home.

Instead of enjoying their company, I found myself in the middle of a chaotic biker bar, trying to stay calm as gunshots ring out around me.

What I never expected was for one of the bullets to hit me.

Pain sears through my abdomen like a hot iron, and the shock sets in.

A sea of people are running around me, rushing toward the nearest exit.

I can’t blame them for wanting to get the fuck out of here.

My legs give out from under me, and I start falling to the ground.

Screams echo out around me, and I’m caught mid-air by someone.

I try to focus on whoever’s catching me and realize it’s my aunt Jada.

Everything happened so fast.

Men in masks had stormed the bar with guns, and at first, I thought it was some kind of costume—until they started firing.

My aunt lowers me to the ground, keeping me from falling.

I look down, trying to figure out where I was hit.

My aunt’s worried voice is drowned out by the screams and chaos around us.

I frantically scan her face, my mind struggling to grasp the reality of the situation.

Is this really happening, or am I about to wake up from some god-awful nightmare?

I search her eyes for answers, desperation creeping into my voice. “Jada, what happened? Oh my god, is this real?”

I don’t call her aunt Jada because it’s too formal for the relationship we have.

I only came into her life a couple of years ago when I finally met my father.

She presses down as hard as she can on the wound in my stomach.

A searing pain radiates through my body like a raging inferno.

I can’t stop the cry of agony that escapes my lips. “God, this hurts.”

I’m trying so hard to be strong right now, but I can’t deny the way I’m feeling.

My attention stays glued to Jada’s hands as I notice blood seeping between her fingers.

She tries to reassure me in a steady voice, but I can detect the underlying terror within it. “You’re okay. Everything is okay, baby girl. Don’t you worry.”

My father, Hammer, comes sliding up beside Jada and places his hands on top of hers.
