His leather cut is hot from the ride as my fingers skirt against it.

I release him and take a step back.

He looks over me, “It’s good to have you back, Oaks,” he pauses for a moment, “Your braids look real nice.”

Jada stands back, grinning at our reunion. “Come on, let’s get inside.”

We all head into the clubhouse through the back door, greeted by pounding music, and grease from fried food wafting through the air.

We go downstairs to the club’s designated area, and as soon as I’m through the doorway a shriek fills my ears.

It’s Shiloh, my stepmom.

I guess you could say she’s happy to see me.

At least, it’s what I think until I realize her shriek is actually a pain-filled groan.

Dad rushes up over to her, scanning her up and down. “Shi, what’s the matter?”

She groans, holding her stomach, unable to form any words.

He freezes and finally blurts out, “Fuck, the baby!”

She groans even louder. “Fuck, I did not expect it to hurt this fucking bad, you fucking idiot!” She glares at my father with all her might.

A couple of the guys in the clubhouse snicker until she looks right at them.

They all shut the fuck up very quickly.

She averts her gaze back to my father. “We need to get to the hospital right now.”

He nods, hooks an arm around her, and I go on the other side, helping to support her. “Jada, can you get the car?”

Jada nods, springing into action, and rushes up the stairs.

Shiloh walks with us out of the room, makes it halfway up the stairwell and another contraction hits.

She moans loudly, breathing harshly as she fights through the pain.

Slowly, we make our way out through the back where Jada has the car running, waiting for us.

We ease Shiloh into the backseat and I sit beside her.

Dad rushes around to the front of the vehicle and stares at my aunt. “Come on, I’m drivin’,”

Jada knows better than to argue with him so she hops over into the passenger seat, twisting around to check on Shiloh. “Just breathe, mama. We’re gonna get you to the hospital as fast as we can.”

Dad peels out of the alleyway as fast as he can.

I don’t know if it’s because he’s afraid, or elated his new bundle of joy is about to arrive.

At least with this baby, he can be part of her childhood.

My mother never let him be a part of mine.

With dad behind the wheel, we arrived to the hospital in record time.

We manage to get her inside and a nurse immediately takes her back.
