Oakleigh yawns loudly, “I need to get some sleep. Just . . . don’t take too long, okay? I don’t like being in random places by myself.”

“I’ll be back before you know it,” I tell her, stepping out of the room, I shut the door softly behind me.

I stand outside for a moment, thinking about how much shit she’s going to get into when Hammer realizes what she’s done.

She’s an adult, so she can make her own damn decisions, but man there will be some repercussions on her end.

Out of nowhere exhaustion hits me and every time I blink I see floaters.

As much as I want to eat, I think catching a cat nap might be a good idea.

I head back into the room, and sure as shit Oakleigh’s fast asleep.

Smiling at her, I undress and lay down beside her, pulling her warm body against mine.

The moment I wake my body is aching, furious at what I’ve put it through.

The sun streams in through the curtains and I swallow hard.

Oakleigh’s now on the side of the bed, curled up under the covers, still sleeping.

Her chest rises and falls gently, while her braids fan out across the pillow.

The night we slept together she put something on her head. I think it was a bonnet, but I can’t say for certain.

I lean over and press a kiss to the side of her head, “Sleep well, Cola.”

I stretch and get off the bed, lick my dry lips and head for the bathroom.

There are small cups next to the sink, so I turn the water on and fill one up.

Hopefully the water here isn’t tainted, but I’m so fucking thirsty I’d probably still drink it.

I try to be as quiet as possible, not wanting to rip her from her peaceful slumber.

My stomach growls yet again, and this time I’m not going to pussy out on getting some food.

As I stare at myself in the mirror across from me, the dark circles under my eyes are heavy from our ride.

I might have gotten a few hours of decent sleep, but it will have to be enough for now.

I glance back at Oakleigh, still deep in sleep, and decide not to bother her.

While I might be used to these long rides, she isn’t.

She needs to get as much rest as she can before we get back on the road today.

This one is going to be a little longer, and a bit tougher. We have to cross the border, and that’s the trickiest part. Hopefully it’s not too fucking busy.

I quietly slip past Oakleigh, put my clothes on, and grab my wallet from the nightstand.

There’s a diner attached to the gas station and I’m sure they have a decent enough breakfast.

The aroma of bacon and coffee lure me in like no other and I take a seat at the counter.

A blonde waitress with a red name tag comes strutting over to me, “Morning, sugar. What can I get ya?”

Her lips are ruby red and she makes sure to rake her eyes up and down my body slowly.
