I decide to keep the conversation going. “What are you gonna do when your father realizes you’ve gone and left?”

Silence greets me at first, until she finally replies. “I have no idea. I guess I’ll see what happens.”

“Fair enough, but remember to let him know you’re safe. He’s gonna be worried sick.” Hammer and I have been known to butt heads, but have been good allies as well.

My hope is he won’t hold this against me when he finds out I’m the one who personally escorted his daughter out of the country.

As the hours continue to roll by, being on the road for this long is starting to take its toll on me too.

Back in my younger days, this used to excite me, but now it only exhausts me.

I clear my throat, “We’re gonna stop for the day in Douglas. It’s only a few miles away, all right?”

"Sounds good to me," Oakleigh agrees, her voice weary but eager.

I’ve stopped at this hotel before and continue riding up the road until we arrive.

There’s a gas station attached to the hotel, so I pull into the parking lot and ride up to a pump.

Turning my bike off, I dismount and Oakleigh follows suit.

Both of us remove our helmets and our bodies relent at the sudden change in position.

Oakleigh rubs her lower back and groans, “You have no idea how glad I am you want to stop for the day.”

For her first long ride, she’s done a damn good job.

I smirk at her, surprised by her resilience. “Me too. I’m sore as fuck. Come on, let’s go book a room and fill this thing up.”

Oakleigh and I head inside the gas station slash office and book a room for the night, plus put some cash on the pump so we can fill up my tank.

The only thing I want to do right now is crawl into bed and let my body rest, but, the constant growling coming from my stomach tells me I need more than that.

With a key in my pocket, we put our helmets back on and ride over to where our room is.

We both get off, grab our bags, and take our helmets in our room with us.

The door creaks loudly, showing it hasn’t been properly maintained in years.

There’s only one bed in the room, which doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

It’s just another excuse to hold Oakleigh tight.

The room isn’t luxurious in the least bit, but it’s clean and gives us a safe place to rest our heads, so I can’t complain.

Oakleigh sighs in relief, “Finally, a bed!”

She drops her bag down on the floor and jumps on the bed.

I smirk, getting a kick out of her young ways. “Get some rest,"

Oakleigh turns around to face me and raises her brows, “Wait, aren’t you going to sleep too?”

I nod, “Yeah, but I’m gonna get some food. My stomach is growling like fuckin’ crazy.”

Oakleigh giggles, “Okay, fair enough. Would you mind getting me something too? Wake me up if I fell asleep, I’ll still eat it, then go back to bed.”

I nod, “You bet.”
