He can hate me for the rest of my fucking life for all I care.

Amara speaks up again, her tone commanding. “Hammer, cut it out.”

His eyes dart over to her. “I respect the fuck outta you, Amara, but he doesn’t have a right to?—”

Amara cuts him off. “He’s the VP of my charter and you’re damn well going to treat him with respect. Yeah, he’s shacking up with Oakleigh, but you don’t see how things are here on the day to day. He’s everything you could ever hope for in a man for her. He doesn’t treat her poorly, not in the least bit.”

Hammer shakes his head, not wanting to believe a word she’s telling him.

Dante clears his throat and interjects, “It’s true. Amara’s not just saying shit to get your ass to calm down.”

Glancing over beside me, I can practically feel the tension storming through Oakleigh.

The prospects shuffle around nervously, their eyes darting between all of us who are speaking.

I’m sure this isn’t what they expected on their first day here.

Refusing to let this escalate any further, I swallow my pride and speak calmly and look at the prospects. “Come on, guys. Let us show you to your rooms.”

I wave my hand, sliding my other arm around Oakleigh and we head up the stairs.

With each step we take, I can feel Hammer’s glare burning into my back.

I don’t care, though.

I’ll be the bad guy.

I know I can fucking handle it.

As we head up the stairs, her hand finds mine, intertwining her fingers with my own.

I run my thumb over the top of her hand, a silent reassuring gesture that all of this is going to be fine.

As we head up to the second level, Oakleigh turns back to face the prospect. “Sorry about that, guys.”

Doom’s the first one to speak up. “Don’t even worry about it.”

Lashes speaks up next, “If my dad was a decent guy, he’d probably do the same.”

Oakleigh doesn’t say a thing, and I really have a feeling like she believes something could have happened between me and Lashes.

Oak doesn’t know that Lashes is a lesbian, so I’m not her type at all.

Clearing my throat, I look around to the group of them. “None of these rooms have been taken, so go ahead and pick what you want. Unlike Billings, we don’t have ensuite bathrooms for everyone. There’s a communal bathroom with multiple showers at the end of the hall.”

“Cool,” Brick comments.

I inhale deeply, “Go ahead and settle in. I’ll come find you later.”

All of the prospects walk by me, pick out their rooms, and disappear behind the doors.

Finally alone, I talk to her. “You okay?”

She nods once, swallowing hard. “Yeah, I’m fine. Just wish that went a different way.”

I know the feeling. “Me too. I knew he’d find out at some point, but I had hoped it would’ve been different.”

“Yeah, me?—”
