Do I run?

If you make a sound, I’ll slit your throat.

I sob and I can feel the sharp edge of the blade as he squeezes my breast so hard I have to bite my lip from crying out. It’s a subtle warning to be quiet, one I heed before he slides the groping hand down my side to my leg and to the hem of my dress.

I softly whimper as he roughly yanks the hem of my dress up around my waist.

He planned this,I think. To lure me.

He never liked you.

Stupid, stupid girl.

My heart is a racehorse inside my chest, pounding so hard I think it might break through my ribs.

He yanks my underwear down, his breath, stale with alcohol skitters across my ear, and when his fingers find me, I recoil at his touch, but there’s nowhere to go.

My mind races as his hand disappears until he removes the one in front of my throat and places it on my back instead, shoving me over the sink in one hard, fluid motion.

My mouth hits against the metal faucet and my eyes water and burn from the sharp stab of pain. The metallic taste of blood fills my mouth as I grip the sides of the sink, bent over, thoughts spiraling.

His hips are still pressed firmly against me, pinning me in place where I feel him now, bare on my backside as I realize what’s about to happen, what he’s about to do.

I hear the crinkle of foil behind me, and panic claws at my chest, a beast ready to be let free.

The hand holding the knife has dropped to my abdomen. It’s still there, but it’s loose as he struggles behind me.

With a grunt, he moves his hips ever so slightly, I rear my elbow back as hard as I can, aiming for where I feel his breath against me, hoping like hell I don’t miss.

The blow to my elbow brings fresh tears to my eyes. It cracks against something hard, and he cries out. Something clatters to the ground and I pray is the knife.

Regardless, I know I only have precious seconds, as I spin around and start to run.

A hand clamps down on my arm, but I shove at him, punching and kicking and screaming. Something catches onmy strap and it rips. This time, when his hand finds my mouth, I sink my teeth into his fingers.

His blood curdling scream pierces the quiet, and he yanks his hand away at the same time I release him and run.

The heels of my shoes clack on the hard floor, but I don’t dare take the time to remove them as I feel around the room.

I sob, cursing myself for making a sound as I hear footsteps shuffle behind me.

Searching the wall, I hurry, my fingers trailing over the cold metal surface of the locker room, then the wall, then . . . a door handle.

I feel for the lock, finding it just as the footsteps grow louder behind me.

I flick it open as I scream and burst outside into—

“Brynn. Brynn, wake up!” the familiar voice cuts into consciousness, pulling me from sleep. “You’re having a bad dream.”

My eyes fly open, and I wake with a start to find Jace wrapped around me.

Moonlight filters through the window of his bedroom, his features twisted in concern.

I try to catch my breath, and for a moment, I wonder if I’m feverish again before I realize my skin is slick with perspiration because I was dreaming, having a nightmare.Thenightmare.

I haven’t dreamed about that night in a long time. Maybe I’m due. But I wish it could’ve happened when I was alone and not wrapped up in Jace’s arms.

I sit up in bed, and as if sensing my need, Jace hands me a cool glass of water.
