But what bothers me isn’t how good Jace’s hard chest felt under my palms or that he’s an expert with his mouth. Those things were expected, really. A given. What gets my goat is that I allowed lust to cloud my judgment at all. I gave my enemy the upper hand.

Andthatis unforgivable.

I grimace as I think about the prospect of Jace rubbing it in my face or using it against me, which is precisely why I need to act completely unfazed. There’s nothing more unnerving to an egomaniac than complete and utter oblivion. So, ignorance is my game. As far as I’m concerned, our little angry make-out sesh never happened.

CHAPTER 13

BRYNN

It’s been a fewdays since the kiss that never should have happened, and despite wanting to forget about it, Jace’s magic mouth is all I can think about.

His magic mouth?

Even my thoughts are pissing me off. Ugh.

I stab my chicken salad with a fork, picturing Jace’s face in my mind.

“Ah, thank goodness! We were hoping to catch you here, at our usual spot.”

A lunch tray appears on the table across from me, and I glance up to see Charlotte beaming beside a grinning Samantha.

“Nice to know you weren’t abducted by aliens,” Samantha says as she settles into the seat across from me.

“Or sacrificed by Creepy Cate.” Charlotte shivers.

“Unfortunately, none of the above,” I say dryly.

“Uh oh.” Charlotte’s brows pinch. “So, if you weren’t sacrificed on an altar or abducted by soul-sucking aliens with green facesand big black eyes, where the hell were you? When you didn’t show Monday night, we were worried.”

“Especially when someone didn’t answer their phone,” Samantha adds.

I sigh. “Sorry. It all kind of happened fast, and then I got . . . distracted.”By Jace’s tongue.I grimace, taking another bite of salad to hide it while my friends wait expectantly. “I was at Jace’s apartment,” I finally blurt, my mouth half full.

Samantha’s eyes widen as a huge smile splits her face, and Charlotte’s jaw drops.

“Did you sleep with him?” Samantha asks, leaning across the table.

“What? No!” I straighten. “No, of course not.”

Charlotte eyes me like she doesn’t believe me. “Did you do, you know”—she motions with her hand—“other things?”

My mouth hardens, and I point between them with my fork. “See, this is exactly why I waited to tell you two.”

“What?” Samantha shrugs. “Jace is sex on a stick, and you expect us to believe you stayed at his place the last two nights andnothinghappened?” She scoffs like the concept is ludicrous.

“He went with me to the housing department on Monday, after they refused to help me and plead my case, but they wouldn’t budge. Said something about the director being on maternity leave and there’s basically nothing that can be done. Blah blah blah.”

“That’s bullshit,” Samantha says.

“Exactly.” I spear a piece of chicken with my fork. “Anyway, later that night, he shows up at my room and starts packing my things, saying I’m gonna stay with him and I’m not going to argue about it.”

“Hot,” Charlotte says.

I shoot her a glare. “I tried to fight him on it, but he refused to listen. He said my brother was onboard and that he doesn’ttrust Cate not to drag me down with her if she gets busted, not to mention my safety being at risk while she’s there doing Lord-knows-what. And staying with you guys is technically against housing rules, so I’d be putting all of us at risk of getting into trouble. Plus, there’s the fact there’s hardly any room for the three of us. So . . .” I shrug. “I gave in. Crashing at his place seemed easier, so that’s where I’ve been. Hopefully, housing comes through, but if they don’t, I guess I’ll be there until fall semester starts and I can get a change in roommate.”

“Wow. I can’t even imagine living with that boy.” Samantha fans her face. “Oh, the things you’ll see.”

Charlotte’s lashes flutter. “Fresh from the shower with nothing but a towel wrapped around his waist.”
