I turn to her with wide eyes while Samantha groans.

“Or just after his workout, all sweaty, his muscles straining and engorged against his damp shirt,” Samantha says, grinning like the Cheshire Cat while my cheeks turn crimson.

“Do not ever use the word ‘engorged’ in the same sentence as that boy,” I threaten, fake-gagging.

“Ooh oh!”Charlotte practically vibrates in her seat. “Or him lounging around in gray sweats and a tight T-shirt.”

Samantha bites her lip. “I think I just got a lady boner.”

I chuck a crouton at them both, and they burst into a fit of giggles.

“You forget he hung out at my house all the time in high school. It was practically like having another brother around. And trust me, drinking half a gallon of milk straight from the jug and belching in my face, leaving his stinky football equipment everywhere, and him using all the hot water for a thirty-minute shower where he’s doing who-knows-what, is not all that impressive.”

Samantha’s lips quirk, letting me know she thinks otherwise. “Wanna trade places? I’ll take Jace, and you take Charlotte.”

Charlotte makes a sound of offense, her mouth a round O.

“You’ve seen the boy,” Samantha says in defense. “Don’t act so shocked that I’d trade you in for a set of bulging biceps, a rock-hard chest, and washboard abs, okay?”

Charlotte shrugs. “I can’t even be mad.”

“Ha ha,” I pantomime. “You’re both unhinged.”

“Whatever.” Samantha takes a bite of her burger. “Ten bucks says he’s in your pants by the end of the month.”

“That’s only two weeks,” I say, my tone indignant.

Charlotte narrows her eyes on me and purses her lips as if considering. “Her hatred runs deep. I give it four.”

I gasp, then recover as my resolve hardens. “Never gonna happen.”

Little do they know, for one brief moment Monday night, my body was singing a different tune.

“Famous last words,” Charlotte singsongs.

“So, where have you been sleeping since you’ve been there?” Samantha asks, her tone smug.

I purse my lips and drop my gaze back to my salad, hoping the guilt I feel inside is not written all over my face, but when I say nothing, Samantha claps her hands. “Oh, please say you’re sleeping in his bed.Please.”

My gaze darts back to hers and I scowl. “Maybe, but he’s sleeping on the couch.”

“Wait. Jace gave you his bed and took the couch?” Charlotte gawks at me like that kind of chivalry is unheard of. And I’ll be honest, I’m surprised by it myself. I never would’ve taken Jace for the kind of guy who’d put a woman before him, especially me.

“He was rather insistent, actually,” I say with a frown.

“Huh. I mean, that’s kinda . . . sweet, right?”

“Super sweet,” Samantha chimes in.

“Pah! Sweet? No.” I shake my head. The last thing I want to do is think of Jace as sweet. “Trust me, we fought about it andhe was a total jackass,” I say, then instantly regret it because it brings back memories of the kiss that puts all other kisses to shame, and my cheeks heat.

“Her cheeks are turning pink.” Samantha points with her sandwich, like it’s a loaded gun. “Aren’t her cheeks pink?”

“Definitely a blush coloring those candy apples,” Charlotte croons.

“It’s nothing,” I say a little too loudly before I cram a forkful of salad into my piehole. Maybe if my mouth is completely full and I can’t speak, they’ll drop it.

“Something totally happened.” Samantha narrows her eyes, then says, “We’ll wait,” as she takes a bite of her sandwich.
