“I need more stolen kisses.”

He indulged me. His mouth was soft and insistent.

“We should get out there,” I said, trying to strap down my senses.

His lips quirked up just enough. “Was there something else you came here to do?”

“You mean besides this? What if the hospital staff finds us back here?”

“I’ll pay them for their silence.”

I chuckled and wrapped my arms around him, allowing his mouth to explore mine a little longer.

“How about ice skating tomorrow night?” he suggested, threading his fingers through mine and leading me down the hall.

An answer formed in my mind but didn’t quite make it out as we stepped over the tiny colored tiles intermixed with gray. I was too flushed, too immersed in the moment we’d just shared.

The hospital’s waiting room wasn’t far. A vivid scene of forest animals covered the wall as usual, but the chairs werepushed aside to make room for two long counters with barstools standing in front of them.

Several tall, wide shelves held cellophane bags filled to bursting with colorful candy. Each bag was tied with sparkling pink and black ribbons.

A large banner swooped across the entryway, brandishing the Ever After Sweet Shoppe logo.

“Oh, wow.” I stopped alongside a pair of nurses in red scrubs. I’d come to know several of them by name after my many visits here.

“Right?” Martha said.

She had short, blonde hair and a friendly demeanor. Her red scrubs were perfect for the season.

“The kids are going to love this. I can’t wait for them to wake up to their pillowcases. Add this to it, and they’ll have the best Christmas anyone could hope for.”

Hawk strolled through the space, inspecting goodie bags and wrapped packages beneath the sparkling tree in the corner by the cash register on its counter.

I loved this. If I ever had money like this, I’d want to use it to help others, too.

He made his way back to me and handed me a pink apron set off with black and white-striped edging. He’d already slipped his on over his head.

I considered teasing him about the fact that he wore something so feminine, but he didn’t seem to care.

“Tell me you’re wearing matching socks,” I said as I tied my apron behind me. “Or pink atthe very least.”

“You know, I should have some Ever After socks made.”

“I can’t believe you haven’t thought of it before.”

“You’re inspiring.”

“I’m something.” I gestured to his feet. “So let me see, then. Show me what you’ve got.”

Smirking, he lifted his pant leg and displayed a pair of bright green Grinch socks.

“The Grinch? That doesn’t fit you at all.”

“I assure you, these are my size.”

I narrowed my eyes. “You know that’s not what I meant.”

He edged closer and lifted his chin. “Okay, then. What did you mean?”
