“Like what?”

I pressed my nose to her cheek. It was cold. “Being alone with you, in the dark, in the shadows…”

Though her cheeks were cold, her breath was hot. It struck my cheek. “Now isn’t the time?”

“Definitely not.”

Her lashes were dark, and her eyes gleamed as they flicked up at me. “Take advantage of me later?”

“I like the way you think.”

We both returned our attention to our target. Pris peered behind her and quickened her pace, sticking to shadows of her own.

I wondered where Noah was, but I didn’t doubt he was out here somewhere. And Duncan and Maddox, had they gotten to their places?

Could they also see Pris from where they were?

Gesturing with my head, I tightened my hand on hers, and we tiptoed in the directionPris took.

Her steps slowed. She approached the shadowed corner where the dock angled out. A regular-sized door was there, too. She shrank low, advancing gradually.

“Are you here?” she said in a loud, tentative whisper.

No one responded.

Ella and I exchanged another glance, and she gave a nod in Pris’s direction. I pressed a finger to my lips and then pointed toward her.

Ella nodded.

“Informant?” Pris said, louder this time.

Informant? Did that mean—didshenot even know who she was meeting with?

Ella and I tiptoed closer. She released my hand…

…and then I froze.

Something hard pressed into my back. The sound of a pistol being cocked crackled through the night air.

Suddenly wishing I’d had my gun at the ready, I halted and lifted my hands in surrender, praying whoever it was didn’t pull the trigger.

Hawk stopped soonerthan I planned. I peered back at him to find his hands in the air and his eyes wide with panic.

A shadowed figure was behind him, gripping him on the shoulder, and my heart stopped. There was only one reason Hawk would have his arms up like that.

Did that person behind him have a gun to his back?

What about Hawk’s gun? Why didn’t he have it out?

My stomach hardened like a rock. Night sounds rushed through my ears—or maybe that was just the rapid speed of my pulse as fear took over my limbs.

I held my breath, gulping it down in an attempt to remain quiet. Against my will, a small squeak of fear slipped from my lips.

I raised my hands to my mouth, but it was too late.
