“Hello?” she said.

“Hello, is this Missy?”

“Yes.” It sounded like a question. “Who’s calling?”

“This is Hawk Danielson from Ever After Sweet Shoppe. I have a request I’d like to make, and trust me, I’ll make it worth your time and sacrifice…”

I explained my situation and shared a number of what I was offering her for taking the time to do this so last-minute and so inconveniently.

She swore.

She hung up.

Gritting my teeth, I called her back again.

The dial tone rang. I worried she wouldn’t answer, but fortunately, she did.

I propped myself on the bed with my elbow and stared at my bedroom’s open door. Sounds shuffled from down the hall—my housekeeper, probably.

“Missy, I promise you, this isn’t a prankcall. I’m in dire straits to treat my girl right tonight, and Faye Carroll said you were the one to call.”

“Faye?” Her tone brightened. “Why didn’t you say so in the first place?”

Relief was palpable. I sat back up again and slid off the bed once more. I wasn’t sure who else I would call if this hadn’t worked.

I was also ridiculously happy to do something to help this woman out. Ella and Faye had both told me things were tight for her right now.

I strode to the other side of my bedroom where the entrance to my closet was and stared at its contents. Suits, dress shirts, and slacks were hung pristinely on hangers on one side.

My shirts and jeans were folded impeccably on shelves on the other. Shoes, socks, belts, and everything else were all in their places, thanks to my housekeeper.

“I know it’s Christmas Eve,” I said into the phone. “I know this will be taking time away from your family, which is why the amount I offered you still stands.”

“Ten grand?” She sounded skeptical.

I could understand. For anyone else, I was sure it was an exorbitant amount.

I let my next response be my answer. “Can you be open in thirty minutes?”

“Honey, I’d bungee jump off the Golden Gate Bridge for ten thousand dollars.”

I smirked. That would be something to see, even if that particular bridge was on the other side of the country.

“Thank you,” I said. “I’ll have Ella and Faye there soon.”

The dress shop owner gave me a similar response, but that only widened my smile. And I made the last call.

“Ella? Yeah, it’s Hawk. There’s been a slight change in plans…”

I staredat my phone in disbelief. Our conversation replayed in my mind over and over.

Hawk was sending a car over for me? He had several surprises for me and wouldn’t be coming himself because it would ruin the final effect?

“I’m speechless,” I’d told him.
