“Good,” he’d said. “I’ll see you soon. Keep an eye out for my car.”

Excitement built within my bones, making them feel as though they were energizing.

I had no idea what to expect. He’d said something about red carpet and pulling strings. Whatever that meant.

I checked my appearance in the mirror, slipped into my coat—which was still slightly damp from the snowfall I’d gone out in earlier—and paced in front of the window that looked down on my complex’s parking lot.

Waiting.

And waiting.

And waiting.

Finally, a black car pulled in—but it wasn’t the kind of car I’d expected. Then again, I should have known he’d do something so lavish.

“A limo?” I muttered, killing the lights, snatching my keys from their peg, and broaching the cold.

I was surprised a car like this was maneuverable in this parking lot, but the dark car with its long body and unusually placed doors was parked directly in front of the stairs as I descended.

The driver emerged from his door. He was middle-aged with graying red hair, lines near his mouth, and kind eyes. He hunched over slightly, giving me the impression he was cold.

“Good evening, Miss Embers,” he said.

“Hi.” I dipped my chin, feeling sheepish.

What did I say to treatment like this? I was so not used to it.

“I’m Cameron, and I’ll take you where you need to go.”

“Th—thank you.”

He meandered to the set of back doors, pulled one open, and revealed a lined face I loved. Her short curly hair was wrapped with a thin, sheer scarf the way I’d seen her do a dozen times before, and she shifted as if to exit the vehicle.

“Sweet, isn’t he?”

“Grammy?” I said in surprise. “What are you doing here? Since when do you ride in limos?”

And how had Hawk ever found out she wasmy grandma? Suspicion tingled through my body, but the cold was starting to make my jaw judder.

“Since your sweetheart also happens to be my godson.”

I gaped at her. The hits of surprise just kept on coming. “You’re kidding.”

Grammy beamed and lifted her warm hands to take mine. “Hawk just told me the news. You should have told me you didn’t have a dress. I could have helped.”

“I know—I was?—”

I was still too stunned. I couldn’t form any words.

“He’s a good boy.” She nodded. “A good boy, and he’s got something pretty sweet lined up for you. Are you ready to go?”

“You’re coming with me?”

I glanced to Cameron as if for confirmation. The friendly driver nodded.

“Of course,” she said. “I told him he had to wait to see you until the final effects. That way, he can sweep you off your feet.”

“Grammy!”
