“My brain in my pants,” he admitted sheepishly – and Daphne rolled her eyes at his candid answer.

“Oh my gosh, men are all the same everywhere…”

“Now, wait a second,” Max started in disbelief. “We were talking about you, and you are putting this on me.”

“Because you are the one who believes in curses. If you don’t believe, then it gives that garbage zero power over you.”

“You don’t believe in curses?”

“Heck no – and neither should you.”

“Then you actually do want to be in this relationship and move slowly together, one step at a time…”

“Yes – and it took me quite a bit to admit that before you started having some supernatural meltdown over here.”

“I think we should try this again.”

“What?”

“Kissing.”

“You are just trying to get in my pants.”

“If kissing you is all it takes – thenyes– absolutely, I am.”

“It’s gonna take a bit more than that, Buster,” Daphne laughed at his blunt, candid statement said with such honesty and lack of guile as they sat facing each other on the couch.

“Then tell me,” he urged. “Tell me what you like, what turns you on and…”

“No,” she blurted out, getting to her feet. “We are not having this conversation either. If I have to tell you, then why bother? It’s not you or coming from your heart… it’s me giving you instructions on how to play an instrument.”

“You want it to come from my heart?”

“Oh my gosh,” she said in sheer exasperation, throwing her hands up in the air and walking off all of five feet in the small cabin – that felt even smaller now. “We’re not discussing this, and I’m not telling you diddly-squat.”

“But…”

“No!” Daphne blurted out. “If you want this to be a real relationship, then you’ve got to figure it out.”

“So we’re going to try to make this pretend marriage… a real one?” Max began, getting to his feet and putting his crutches under his arms, moving to her side. “If I can figure out how to…”

“Don’t,” she said hoarsely, looking at him. “Just let it go, and let’s stick with starting from scratch as friends.”

“If we were dating, I’d kiss you,” he said softly, reaching up to touch her cheek.

“But we’re not dating.”

“No, we’re married… but a husband can date his wife, can’t he?”

“You’re confusing me,” she uttered, shaking her head. “One minute, you are talking about curses, saying this wasn’t real, and now you are coming onto me? Make up your mind, Max…”

“I could say the same to you,” he whispered, leaning forward and cradling her jaw in his hands and smiling. “You’re my friend, my wife, then you don’t want to be married, then you do… My head is spinning, and my heart is trying to play catch up.”

“Your… heart?” she mumbled, feeling his breath against her lips as they stood there close together.

“Nice. There’s a counter so I won’t fall again,” he volunteered breathlessly. “Because I plan on kissing my wife thoroughly for the first time.”

“Whoaaaa boy…”
