The words were torn from her throat as she stared at his lips and saw that sexy smile lift the corners of them knowingly.

“Like that?” he asked, his voice barely a whisper and so husky it made her shiver in awareness. “You want to hear how I am going to kiss you, my sweet Daphne?”

“N-No,” she squeaked, turning her head away. “Of course not.”

“I think you are lying to me,” he said softly, and she grabbed the counter to keep from falling as he pressed his cheek to hers and spoke softly in her ear. “I think you want to hear what I’m going to do to you… and I think my lovely wife, who wants to be in control all the time, would prefer that I take control when we are alone.”

Daphne made a strangled sound – and pinched her eyes closed as his knowing chuckle.

“When I kiss you, I plan on taking my time…” he whispered against her ear, his breath giving her goose bumps as it warmed her skin. “I’m going to taste you, hold you close to me, and nibble on that delicious lower lip of yours just like you did to me at the hospital… I dream of that kiss and crave it again.”

“Max…”

“Is that what you want, my love?” he asked tenderly. “Is that the key to your heart? Finding a way to seduce your mind before touching the rest of you?”

“I need to do the dishes,” she said distractedly, grasping at straws.

“Forget the dishes,”he growled softly, leaning forward to scrape his teeth against her jaw slightly before kissing her throat. “I’ve got my wife right where I’ve always wanted you… curse or not.”

And she felt his hand on her hip, holding her close to him, and listened fascinated as he spoke to her intimately. She knew her face had to be a billion shades of red, but when he was finished describing in detail what he planned to do to her eventually when they finally decided to celebrate a wedding night – both of them were breathless.

Max leaned back slightly to look at her, touching her chin and turning her face upwards to look at him.

“Am I on the right track, my love?”

“Choo choo…” she said nervously and saw his breathtaking smile.

“Forget the dishes?” he invited huskily, leaning forward to kiss her.

And Daphne nodded, curling her arms around his shoulders.

Daphne wasn’t sure what time it was as she lay on the pull-out bed beside the wood-burning stove. It gave off such a romantic glow in the darkness combined with the reflection off the snow in the moonlight swirling outside the windows.

Max’s arm was around her waist, holding her close, yet his hand was resting against hers where it was on the mattress. He kept touching her fingers, opening and closing their hands together as if he was marveling at their fit just as much as she did.

“You’re quiet…” he whispered.

“Just thinking…”

“Do you want to share?”

“It’s nothing really.”

“Well, it might be important,” he chuckled and dropped a kiss on her shoulder as she smiled.

“Fine. I was wondering what time it was. Better?”

“Okay, maybe it was nothing,” he laughed and nuzzled her hair. “But it’s three in the morning.”

“Seriously?”

“Yeah. I’m sorry I kept you up all night,” he began and then hesitated, laughing once more. “Actually, I lied. I’m not sorry in the slightest.”

Daphne chuckled, looking over her shoulder to see his smile. He tugged her to him, laying her on her back, and pulled the blankets a little higher over both of them, just before he gently rubbed his nose against hers.

“I think you are incredible,” he began – and she put her finger over his lips, needing to stop him before he said too much. This was a lot to happen quickly between them, and it felt like it was magical. She still had her doubts, her fears, and was shaken to her core that someone so perfect could drop into her life out of nowhere… yet there was nowhere else she would rather be in this moment.

“I think you are amazing,” she whispered tenderly, meeting his eyes. “Let’s leave it at that for now so my brain doesn’t bolt in the other direction screaming in fear.”
