Yo, I thought we were buddies.

Why the fake pic?

How many times did you fall, newbie?

Jake! Be nice!

What? Gideon’s sitting across from me at the table, and we’ve got an intense bet going. I said zero, ya know…

HEY!

What? You said twice, ya’ big moron – not me! Don’t be shy, either. My boy can take trouncing your arrogant butt.

So, how much is a chopper to lower you on a mountain range?

Logan, really? You too?

I’m kidding (but seriously, how much?)

(still kidding…)

Those are great photos of you two – things you can frame when you COME BACK HOME TO US.

This ???? All. Of. This.

We were already discussing it, Jill – we miss everyone, too.

And they had.

Last night, they had looked at the stars through the mesh netting of their tent and held each other, talking softly about what to do next. They had been through so many places, had so many moments they shared, and were constantly doing everything they could to make memories.

They had visited Wall Drug in South Dakota, Mount Rushmore, The Badlands, and Yellowstone. The two of them had ridden dirt bikes in Moab, Utah, and watched the sunset over the golden mountains, stood in the rain in line for coffee from the original Starbucks location, and toured wineries in Napa Valley just to say they could. Neither of them drank wine, and every time they sampled one, it was so bitter and dry that they made faces at each other, shivering in disgust. It was those unexpected, shared moments where they could laugh at each other that made it all worthwhile.

But now they were having different conversations.

Adultconversations.

“Jake and Lena are trying for a baby,” Max had whispered against her hair last night before kissing her temple. “He’s really freaked out that he is going to be a bad father, but Lena keeps talking him down. I think he’d be a great dad…”

“I thinkyou’dbe a great dad,” Daphne interrupted, and she felt him tense. “Not now, but maybe someday.”

“You do?”

“Sure, I do,” she replied, sitting up on her arm to look at him. “Are you crazy? Of course, I think you would be an incredible father. You are loving, kind, gentle, and only blow up when things are really bad. I mean, when our kid wrecks the car, you can blow up then…”

Max smiled at her, laughing nervously, and pushed her hair back from her face tenderly as he gazed at her.

“You know if our kid has your eyes, I could never yell at them…”

“Puh-lease,” she smiled, bopping him on the nose playfully. “You sure yelled at me when we first met.”

“Me? Yell? Nawww. I wanted to just make sure the hottest woman in the world noticed me, so I spokeloudly.”

“You yelled, dork.”

“Maybe a little…”

“Maybe a lot.”
