“But you noticed me,” he smiled sheepishly. “And now you are stuck with me forever.”

“Yeah, because you are toasty at night and keep me warm.”

“Is that all?”

She leaned forward to give him a tender kiss instead of answering him, treasuring the fact that he loved to sleep holding each other. He was every bright spot in her world, but there was another blip on the horizon.

“Maybe we could get all of our traveling out of the way,” she whispered carefully, watching his expression as she backed away from the soft kiss. “It would be kinda neat to do a little exploring closer to home…”

“Yeah,” he smiled knowingly.

“Maybe we could look at staying in our cabin again…”

“I think Houghton would let us.”

“ And perhaps we could revisit the conversation about a child with my brown eyes or your smile,” she whispered and saw his eyes meet hers in the moonlight.

“Daphne?”

“It’s just a thought,” she began nervously. “The kids could grow up together, and we could still do some outings…”

“I thought you wanted to see the world, honey.”

“I do, but do you think any child of ours would be content in a classroom or structured environment? Maybe we could look at exploring historical sights and monuments, explore different cultures, and teach them more about the world than just what’s in a book.”

And saw the softest smile touch Max’s beloved face as he looked at her.

“We can do that,” he uttered softly. “You just say the word when you are ready, and we can start trying.”

“Not yet, but it’s on my radar,” she admitted, not holding back. “I think it would be so fun to go trick-or-treating with a little version of you. We could do the whole family costumes, like Sesame Street or Pokémon…”

“Oh gosh…” he chuckled, caressing her cheek. “You sound positively domestic now.”

“Maybe it’s not so scary to me anymore now that I’ve found the right partner…”

“Have I mentioned that I love you?” he asked huskily, threading his fingers in her hair and pulling her to him.

“Meh, you could always say it again,” she teased, pretending to be evasive, but inside, her heart was melting. “You should probably say it one more time just to make sure I hear you.”

Max moved quickly and rolled her over, and braced himself on his elbows, before leaning toward her. His lips barely touched hers as he gingerly caressed her nose tenderly, prolonging the moment between them. His eyes met hers, and she saw the love reflected in them, treasuring this miracle between them.

“I love you, Daphne,” he breathed against her lips, taking a moment to nibble at her bottom lip as a reminder. “…And I always will.”

Shaking her head at the intense memories, she stood there watching her husband, admiring his form and saw Max jump slightly when he noticed her.

“Sheesh, you scared me…” he chuckled.

“Boo…” she said quietly and walked over to him as he immediately slipped his arm around her hips, hugging her close despite the awkward angle from the low camping chair.

“I think Jake is eager to see you again,” she whispered, touching Max’s unkempt hair lovingly. “He just texted again to ask where we were.”

“Oh gosh,” he chuckled knowingly. “It’s been less than twelve hours.”

“I know.”

“What do you want to do?”

“Talk about it together,” she countered. “I’m not making this decision alone.”
