“Means I’d like us to get to know one another a little better. I’d like to see if this thing that pulls me toward you could possibly be two-sided.” The big cowboy was too smooth for his own good, but he didn’t seem to be paying attention.

“Clay?” I sat up a little straighter, not missing the thick, hard bulge beneath me.

“Hmm?” He exhaled roughly as his hands dropped to my hips. I’d worn a dress to work like I usually did. And in that moment, I was so glad I hadn’t had the time or energy to change out of it when I made it home. The skirt of the dress was bunched at my thighs, and I could feel the tips of his fingers skimming my bare skin.

“I don’t think you’ve been paying attention.”

“How’s that, sugar?” It was obvious I’d taken him off guard.

“Honey, I’ve cried in your arms and then laughed in them.”

“Yeah, so?”

“You’re in my apartment, after ten,” I pointed out.

“I popped by.”

“And I let you in. Clay, I’m sitting on your lap. I don’t know what other hints you need, but let me be very, very clear. I’m very interested in getting to know you.” His hold on my hips tightened. Not in a painful way but in a possessive one.

“I’m drawn to you, too, Clay,” I whispered, letting myself be vulnerable for the first time in a very long time. “I think that’swhy I like to poke your buttons,” I confessed. “You’re kinda cute all riled up.”

His hands wrapped around me and pulled me in. Not to kiss me like I’d hoped but to hug me.

And what a hug it was.

Even after his hold on me loosened, I still rested my cheek on his shoulder.

“I like this,” he admitted. “Like you on me like this.”

“Such a guy thing to say,” I teased with a wink when I lifted my gaze to meet his. “I like this, too.”

“Breakfast?” he asked again.

“Breakfast.” I nodded, agreeing to see him again.

“I should get going, then.” His hand patted my ass softly, and I chewed on my bottom lip.

“You could stay,” I offered and watched Clay’s nose flare. “I mean…” My face brightened. “I have a king-sized bed,” I blurted out, trying to correct the misunderstanding yet just made it worse. Would he think I was throwing myself at him? Wasn’t I?

“I just mean we could both fit. Or you could take my room and—" His fingers touched my lips. His Adam’s apple bobbed up and down.

“It’s so damn tempting to tell you yes. And I swear to you, Emi, there is nothing more that I want to do than take you to bed and show you just how interested I am in you.” I shifted against his thickening manhood and couldn’t stop the soft moan that slipped past my lips. “Emi,” he groaned, almost like he was in pain. “I want that so fucking bad.”

“But?” I asked, my mouth once again getting the better of me before my brain could stop the words.

“But I don’t trust myself not to try to get between your pretty little thighs and have my way with you.”

“You make that sound like a bad thing.” I licked my lips. I couldn’t tear my eyes off his. I wanted to float in the beautifulpools of blue for all eternity. “I just mean…” I leaned closer, so close we shared the same air. His breath fanned my mouth and left it tingling. The sensation felt almost electric. “We’re two consenting adults. There is most definitely something between us and?—”

“And I want there to be more than one night,” Clay cut me off. The sexy cowboy in front of me was trying to be a gentleman, but it didn’t make the sting of rejection any easier.

“Okay,” I breathed out and shimmied off his lap before fixing the skirt of my dress. “So, umm…” My eyes couldn’t meet his. I’d all but stupidly thrown myself at him. I should have known better.

“Thank you for dinner and—" His arms reached for me and pulled me back to the spot I’d just left. “Clay!” I frowned when I looked at him and found him smiling.

“You want me,” he pointed out almost arrogantly, and I rolled my eyes.

“Maybe? But that lasted about eight seconds before you turned me down.”
