“C’mon, girl,” I murmured to Milky Way, clutching her to my chest and exiting the car. “Let’s go meet your new favorite people.”

I started toward the front door only to stop in my tracks halfway up the sidewalk.

“Peter.”

I blinked. Rage flared inside me, hot and cold at the same time. A horrible pain stole my breath like a sucker punch. “Adam.”

Milky Way twisted in my arms, sensing my distress. I held her tighter.

Adam rose from the front stoop and walked toward me, his shaking hands outstretched, and his expression lost. “Peter, please listen to me.”

I shook my head. “Stop stalking me.”

“But I chose you,” he said, his voice strained with emotion. “No, Ichooseyou. It’s over with Leslie, forever and for good. She knows everything now. She knows I’m in love with you, and that I’ve chosen you.”

I blinked at his delusion. “You haven’t ‘chosen’ me. I’m not available. You need to leave me alone.”

“Peter, I know I did a lot of things wrong. I’m going to be a better person, I promise. Iknowyou still love me. You never stopped. How could you stop? We’re a masterpiece. There’s nothing out there like us.” His voice broke. “Just say you’ll take me back. I’ll be so good to you. You’ll be so happy. I promise, Peter. On my honor.”

I almost laughed. His honor? What was that worth? But my heart hammered in fear. He was blocking the entry to my house, the way to safety. I backed up, deciding to return to my car. He strode toward me, and I ran. I got my keys into the car door just as he reached me, but I couldn’t turn them in time.

“Don’t be afraid,” he said, not touching me, but reaching out and putting his hands on either side of me against the roof of my car, boxing me and Milky Way in. His eyes traveled down to her and grew soft. He murmured, “Is this your new dog?”

“She’s my boyfriend’s dog,” I gritted out, wanting him to get it. I wasn’t available.

“What’s her name?”

“It’s not your business.”

“She’s pretty.”

“Go home.”

“I will, but I just need you to understand. You have to believe me. It’s over with Leslie.”

“Great. It’s over with Leslie.” I doubted it was even true.

“No!” he said, vehemently. “It’snotgreat. It hurt her a lot. But I couldn’t stop loving you, Peter. I couldn’t forget you no matter how hard I tried, and I know you feel the same about me.” His voice softened, wheedling.

I couldn’t believe he thought he could convince me to come back to him. Once, I’d loved him with my whole heart. I’d have done anything to hear him say these words a year ago. But not like this. I’d never wanted it to be like this.

“Adam, move your hands off my car.”

“Tell me you believe me.”

“I believe you.”

“You believe me about what?”

“That it’s over with Leslie.” Milky Way panted with anxiety. “I believe you.”

He stepped back, but not far enough that I could make a break for it. He was stronger than me. Physically, he always had been. Emotionally, though? That was another story.

“Do you believe me when I say I love you? That I’ve always loved you?”

“I guess.”

“What does that mean?” His voice pitched up. “I’ve never wavered.”
