I nodded.

“He better.”

I didn’t dignify that with a response.

We didn’t talk the rest of the way to Sean’s house, except for Adam to give me directions. As he got out of the car, garbage bag in hand, I got out, too. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. This was it. Our final goodbye.

“Hey,” Adam said, coming around to my side of the car. “I’ll always love you.”

I cleared my throat. Didn’t say anything.

“I’m sorry for how I hurt you.”

“Thanks,” I whispered.

“Thank you for last night. For holding me.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Peter?”

“Yeah?”

“You’re a great photographer. Don’t give that up.”

“I won’t.”

“Take care of yourself.”

“I will.”

As he walked up the sidewalk to the front porch of Sean’s small, blue-shuttered house, I felt a strange need grip me.

I opened the back door of the Volvo, grabbed my point-and-shoot camera from the box, and aimed it at him. He turned back, raised his hand, and gave me a small wave.

Click, snick.

I captured it.

My last photo of Adam.

Chapter Thirty-Nine

“Hey,” I said, coming in through the front door.

Milky Way acted like she hadn’t just seen me thirty minutes earlier.

Daniel sat on the sofa, his elbows on his knees, and his head in his hands. He looked up, brown eyes darker than usual. “Hey.”

“So that’s done,” I murmured, toeing off my shoes, and hanging my jacket on the coatrack Daniel had put by the door. The Christmas tree lights were off, and so I went over to turn them on. It was pretty shabby-looking after days without water. It might even be a fire hazard. I pondered it a moment before turning back to Daniel. “How was your trip?”

“It was all right.”

I sat by him on the sofa, but he was tense. “The airline didn’t change your flight time, did they?”

He huffed a laugh. “No. I did.”
