Me

sure

With I sigh, I tucked the phone away.

“What was that?” he nodded to my hands.

“Miranda asked me to keep Charlie tonight.”

“Did the boys get their ropes?” He chuckled.

Thinking about the boys lightened my mood. “Yeah. They had their ties on. Kids are so genuine. They’re happy to have each other and it doesn’t matter that they just learned they’re brothers.”

“Well, that’s now.” He stood up. “There’ll be questions later, and the best thing you can do is to be honest.”

“It might make me an asshole, but I don’t plan on ever telling Dillon I’m not his biological father.”

“Son, that makes you a parent.” He sighed. “Your name is on the birth certificate. You named him and you’re raising him. You are his father. Blood doesn’t make you family.” Dad shookhis head. “Plus, neither of his biological parents are alive.” He shrugged. “So I’ve heard.”

“There is that.” I smiled. “He is mine.”

“See you in a bit at your mother’s.”

Nodding, I got up and left his office. Since I was downtown, I got back into my car and went to the diner. Gene was working and I could kill some time there.

Today when I entered the diner, it was abnormally empty. “Who scared everyone off?”

Gene looked up from the table he was bussing. “It’s a Thursday. This is normal. But you know what’s not normal?”

“Humor me.” I took a seat at the counter.

“You being here in the late morning.” He brought the large tote with him to the counter. “What’s going on?”

“I have a son.”

“No shit, Sherlock.” He laughed. “We all know Dillon.”

“What’s up with Dillon?” Ethan came walking from the back.

“Why are you here?” I pointed at him.

“Vivi has plans to go out today, so I took the day to be around if she needs me.”

“You know you still got a few months before she pops, right?”

Ethan looked appalled. “I know. But I missed everything the last time.”

“I get it.”

“Good.” Gene took the tote over to the swinging door. “Why don’t you tell Ethan your headlining news?”

“I have a son.”

His lips twisted up. “Remember when people saw Frankie, they knew?”

“Man, if you tell me you knew before today, we’re going out back.”

“Whoa.” He held up his hands. “Slow down there, Tyson.”
