“Fucker.” He flipped me the bird. “Not until after this one comes into the world.”

Edie came back around to get our orders and we spent the rest of the time bullshitting and catching up with each other.

The diner was filled with hungry customers and Gene went to help Edie since we were almost done with our lunch.

I made reservations at the yacht club for tonight. My plans were to take Miranda and the boys out for afancyfamily dinner and then I could pop the question. And I bought us boys new ropes to wear.

Ethan and Dexter threw some money on the table and waved as they left. James and Chase were called out to a car accident, so they threw money down and ran. Richard, Pete and I helped bus some tables before adding to the pile of money on our table and leaving.

Tonight’s going to be epic.

Miranda

Tara and I were cleaning up the common room from bingo when I heard heels clicking on the floor. In a nursing home setting, that’s not a familiar sound, and I looked up to see Margaret Walsh walking towards us.

“Fuck me.” I mumbled and kept wiping down tables.

“Melissa.” Her voice made me snarl, but I didn’t look her way even as she cleared her throat to get my attention. “Melissa.”

“You’ll need to check with the nurse’s station to find your Melissa, ma’am.” Tara responded for me.

“She is right there.” Her haughty tone increased.

“Oh her?” Tara mocked her. “That’s Mur-an-duh. Have you been checked for early signs of dementia?”

“I got it, T.” I laughed and looked at Margaret. “What do you need, Magnolia?”

“Excuse me?” She looked horrified.

“Did you need something, Martha?” I walked over to put my cleaning supplies away.

“My name is Margaret.” She snapped as she crossed her arms over her chest.

“Oh. Right.” I turned and leaned against the small cabinet. “What can I help you with?”

“I would like to spend time with my grandson.” She sniffed.

“Dillon or Charlie?” I crossed my arms over my chest, mimicking her.

Her nostrils flared slightly. “Both.”

“They’re very behaved and we’ve got them housebroken.”

Tara snorted in laughter. “She’s right, Morgan. They are very good little boys.”

Her chest heaved, and you could see the anger growing in her eyes. “Are they available tonight?”

“Yes.” I tilted my head. “You can meet me at the daycare around three fifteen.”

“Surely I can just go pick them up without you?”

“No.” I shook my head. “Charlie’s never met you. I want to be there to explain who you are to him.” Pushing off of the cabinet, I walked towards her. “And you’re not an approved person to sign the boys out.”

“That can be recti …”

“No.” My nostrils flared. “You willneverbe an approved person. Have a nice day, Margo.” There was a bounce in my step as I walked away from her.

That woman no longer gets a moment of my thoughts.
