I enjoyed the rest of my workday and felt amazing dishing shade back to that twunt. The only time worry filtered in was when I thought about how she might treat Charlie.

If she upsets either of my boys, I’ll tear her in two.

My supervisor let me leave twenty minutes early so I could swing home and get a bag packed for the boys. I didn’t know what her plans were, and I wanted to be sure they had things to do if all they did was sit at her house.

When I got back to the daycare, my boys were happily swinging with Frankie in the backyard. Miss Monica met me at the door.

“Hello there.” Her smile grew bigger. “Your boys are in overdrive today.”

“They are?” I laughed. “What’s got them wound?”

“They have a secret.” She winked.

My head fell back in laughter. “Of course they do.”

She stepped back, letting me inside, and I made my way to the backyard where her assistant was.

“Hey Natalie.”

“Hey Miranda.” She nodded to the boys. “They’ve been waiting for you.”

“Mommy!” they both yelled and came running over to me.

I leaned down to get their hugs and then waved at Frankie. “Hello, sweetie.”

“Hi aunt ran.” She bounced over to us.

“I hear you boys have a secret.”

“Mommy, we can’t tell you.” Dillon made a shh sign with his finger and lips.

“Tell me this much. Is it dangerous?”

They giggled like hyenas. “Nope!”

“Then you can keep your secret.” I kissed both of their cheeks. “If it would hurt someone or be dangerous, you shouldn’t keep those secrets. Deal?”

“Deal.” Charlie nodded and Dillon bobbed his head alongside him.

“Good.” I took a seat and had them sit with me. “Your grandma is going to pick you up in a few minutes to spend some time with you.”

“I has a grandma?” Charlie’s face twisted in confusion.

“You do.” I nodded and saw Dillon’s face fall. “Baby, what’s wrong?”

“Do we has to go?” He made himself smaller and wrapped his arms around his legs.

“No.” I shook my head. “You don’t have to.”

“There you are!” Margaret’s voice rang out, and I glanced over my shoulder. “Dillon, Grammy has missed you!”

“Hi, Grammy.” Dillon gave her a small wave.

Charlie tilted his head and seemed to be sizing her up.

“Oh.” Her voice softened. “You must be Charlie.”

His little head bobbed.
