Her red hair was darker from being washed, her skin glowed, and the blue dress she wore complimented her eyes.

Let’s change the plan. The small voice in my head had a thought.

“Gorgeous.” I glanced over at the clock while tying my rope. “Ready?”

“I’m ready.”

Once she turned her back, I grabbed my jeans from the floor and moved the ring box to my inner jacket pocket.

We left our room, made it through the house and into the car before I spoke again. Reaching over, I threaded my fingers with hers and lifted her hand to my lips for a kiss.

“Have you thought about getting married?” I stole a quick look her way before looking back to the road.

“Depends.”

“On?”

“I don’t want a big wedding, or big to-do.” She shook her head. “I want something simple and quick.”

It’s a solid plan change.

“Simple and quick, you say?” I nodded my head. “What do you think about spending the rest of your life with me?”

She giggled. “I think I’d like that.”

At the next stoplight, I turned to head downtown instead of the club. I caught her looking around.

“Henry? Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.” I lifted her hand and kissed it again. “I had a thought.”

“Oh, Lord.” A puzzled look spread across her beautiful face. “I hope it doesn’t have a goat involved.”

“No goats. I promise.” I gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. She crossed her legs, and her dress lifted, showing me further up her thigh. “One of these days, we’re going back to the treehouse so I can molest you.”

“I can make that happen.” She blew me a kiss.

Calm down. Don’t need to walk into the courthouse with a hard-on.

The speed limit dropped as we got closer to our destination and in my peripheral I caught her head whip my way.

“Hennnnn-ry?”

“Yeah?” I pulled into a parking spot and killed the engine.

“Is this where we’re eating dinner?” Her eyes narrowed playfully.

“Nope.” I glanced at the clock and got out of the car, running around opening her door. “If you would be so kind, madam.” I offered my hand.

Please don’t leave me hanging.

A moment of insecurity and fear gripped my heart during the few seconds it took her to accept my hand and get out of the car.

We walked into the courthouse and took the elevator up to the county district court.

I always thought that when the time came to get married again, I’d be a wreck, but I’ve never been more sure of anything in my life.

When the doors opened, I led her to the clerk and leaned against the counter. “Afternoon, Annette.”
