“I … I … I …” Dillon hiccupped. “Sowwy.” He hiccuped again.

I stood up, kicked my heels off, then sat down and pulled Dillon into my lap. “Baby, what are you sorry for?”

“Ga …” He shook and couldn’t catch his breath.

I held him tight and rocked us side to side. “You’re safe now, mama’s here.”

“Hers tolds him that you not his mama.” Charlie popped up and paced, jumping into the small puddles. “Hers says hims not my brudder.”

“Well, she’s wrong.” I lifted Dillon’s chin so I could see his eyes. “I love you, and as long as you want me, I will be your mama and you two are absolutely brothers.”

“And hers not know Dweelion’s name.”

The anger that began as a pit in my stomach grew into a dark rage.

Who the fuck does that bitch she think she is?

Dillon calmed down and rubbed his sleeve under his nose. “Gammy hit my brudder.”

“I’m sorry, Dillon. Did you just say she hit Charlie?” My voice was dangerously soft.

He nodded, and Charlie walked closer to me. “Here.” He pointed to his cheek and closer to his ear were three red spots.

“There you are!” Henry came in and looked at the three of us. “Did I just hear right?”

Dillon climbed from my lap and ran to Henry. He lifted him up and held him tight while Charlie wrapped his arms around his thigh.

Pushing myself up from the floor, I put my heels back on and stormed from the locker room.

Game. Over. That bitch is no longer allowed anywhere near my family.

I could feel water dripping from my body as I made my way back to the dining room. Margaret was sitting near Thomas and his friends and, by the look on his face, he was trying to be civil.

The time for civility was done.

“Meredith!” I snapped as I weaved through tables, my eyes locked on her. “Yeah, you, Michelle.”

“Melanie.” She held up her hands. “This is no place …”

“The hell it’s not!” I placed my hands on my hips and glared at her. “Who the hell do you think you are?”

Her mouth opened.

“Oh no.” I waggled my finger at her. “Your time to speak is over. Your time with my family is over. And I swear if you come near me or my boys, I will choke the living shit out of you.”

“Excuse me?” She dramatically covered her heart. “How dare you?”

“How dare I?” I moved closer. “You slapped my son. He’s not even five yet! And you put your filthy hands on him! You made my other son cry. And do you know why he was crying, Marylou?” I took another step closer. “Because, Margo, youchoosenot to remember his fucking name!”

“Hers membered my name!” Charlie yelled from behind me.

“How dare you, Morgan? How dare you treat a child so callously?” I threw my hands in the air. “You know what, Molly? I know how. I remember some of the things you’ve said over the years to Henry. And Vivi. And how instead of having his back, you pushed for him to do what you thought was best for your image.”

I walked over to her, close enough to shove her. “Shame on you, Margaret. You’re a vain, nasty, vile, disgusting maggot of a human. You don’t deserve the love that people have given to you.”

I shoved her again, and she lost her balance, falling back on a table, knocking the glasses over and breaking the dishes as they slid and fell.

“Don’t come near me, my husband, my father-in-law or my children.” I sneered. “My grandpa was right. You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still just a pig.”
