Tara burst out in laughter. “God hates you.” She tried to catch her breath, and snorted. “You have to tell him.”

“I know. I know.” Pinching the bridge of my nose, I sighed. “How? How do I go up to the man who, when Itoldhim he was going to be a daddy, said he didn’t want it and say ‘oh, by the way, I birthed your spawn.’?”

“It’s a shit situation. But if you don’t tell him, it’s going to be bad if it comes out like Vivi’s did.”

“It already went from bad to worse.” I rolled my eyes up to stop the tears that threatened to fall. “Charlie’s friends with Dillon.”

“Oh.” She scrunched her nose up. “Miranda, you have to tell him.”

“You got plans tonight?”

“Nope. Why?” She got up from the table.

“Because after I tell Henry, I’m gonna need a tub of ice cream and company.”

“It’s a date, sugar.” She linked her arm with mine. “C’mon, it’s Wednesday. You know how they get when we start bingo late.”

Work flew by after playing bingo. We did some crafts and had a tea party. Med time went smooth and just to keep my anxiety ramped up, my friend thought it was fun to terrorize me by sending me pictures of Henry from the internet.

Walking past her, I grumbled. “I hate you.”

“I know!” She howled with laughter.

After work, I picked up Charlie and drove past Henry’s place.

And then I chickened out.

Charlie rambled from the backseat about everything they did at daycare and when we got home, he helped me feed the geese and dogs.

Both of our bigger dogs were retired service dogs. Hercules and Ellie were amazing with Charlie, and then we had Birdie, who sometimes stayed at the assisted living center and kept the residents happy.

I’ll tell him. Next time our paths cross. Then I’ll tell him.

The next few weeks went by without seeing him. I was at a place where I felt at ease again and thankfully the fourth of July came and went without too much fuss.

Tonight, we were just settling into our routine when there was a knock at the back door. Wiping my hands off, I walked over and saw our maintenance guy from work.

Opening the door, I noticed he was with someone from animal control. “Hey, John.”

“Miranda, we need a favor.” His voice sounded harried.

“What’s going on?”

He pointed behind him. “Miss Rose was gifted something.”

My eyes went from the animal control vehicle to John, and I saw the frown on his face. “Oh, no.”

“Um, so we heard you know a little about goats …”

“Oh. Oh, no.” I shook my head.

“And since you have the barn, we were hoping you could?”

“Are you fucking kidding me?” My jaw dropped. “I haven’t had a goat for years!”

He gave a half smile. “Miss Rose told us to ask you if you could house her until we get the new area ready and then she can come live at the home?”

I laughed and shook my head. “That’s playing dirty.”
