That sounded promising.

“Mom.” Karl called from his table, holding out his cell phone. “It’s Lily and she wants to speak with you.”

Francine made a face, then walked over to grab the phone. “Lily? It’s Francine. Yes, yes, well I certainly understand, but—uh-huh, uh-huh.” Francine let out a huge sigh and held the phone away from her ear.

Everyone winced at the shrill sound of Lily’s voice as she raged and shouted.

“Come along, Francine,” Agatha said. “Let’s just go to the hotel and sort things out from there.”

Francine nodded, still holding the phone away from her ear. She started to follow Agatha and Betina out of the bar, but then whirled, pointed at Sam and said, “When Merry’s ready, take her to the old cabin. Do not let her go to the hotel. She’s ours, not theirs, and we’re not going to share, at least not until she’s decided to stay.” With that, she turned and slammed out of the bar.

“So,” Sam drawled out the word slowly. “Why are you interested in meeting the fairies again?”

“Abort, abort!” Bygul exclaimed. “Someone do something.”

“Why? What’s wrong?” Tivali asked.

“The minute she starts talking about the fairies, it’s all over,” Bygul said. “Look at that wolf. He’s already on the fence about his mate. Did you see his face when the bartender boyfriend announced she’s a demon hybrid?”

Muezza snorted. “You do know his name is Travis, right?”

Bygul twitched his tail in dismissal. “Merry’s right. Bartender boyfriend has a fabulous ring to it. Actually, I think I’ll call him Triple B for Bartender Boyfriend Bear or maybe Beary Boyfriend Bartender. Hm. I’m not quite sure of the order just yet, but that’s beside the point.”

“Then, what is the point?” Tivali asked.

“The point is the wolf needs to claim his mate before he discovers the truth about her.”

“And what truth is that?” Tivali asked.

“That she’s a demon-fairy-witch hybrid, of course.”

“No worries!” Soraya popped back from wherever she’d disappeared to a while back. “I’ve pretty much filled the bar’s cabinets with chocolate.”

“And what’s that going to accomplish?” Bygul asked.

“Hello. Did you not hear Merry going on about conducting sexy chocolate experiments with the wolf? All we have to do is get her some more chocolate and she’ll remember her plans and then, boom, sexy, mating times.”

“Huh. That’s not a bad plan, Soraya.” Bygul was pretty amazed. Then again, he was an excellent trainer and team leader.

Sam was staring at Merry expectantly, so she said, “Well, it’s kind of a long story.”

“I love long stories,” Lara said as she pulled out a chair and plopped down at Merry’s chocolate table.

“Me too,” Gigi said, as she walked up, a purple, poofy dog at her side, with one of the kittens in her arms. “JoJo, meet Merry. Merry brought Koko into our lives.”

JoJo let out a little bark, which made Lara giggle.

“Merry,” Gigi continued, “this is JoJo and Koko.”

“Cocoa, yum,” Merry said.

“K-o-k-o,” Gigi spelled out the name.

“Oh. Well, that’s cute too,” Merry said. Not as cute as Cocoa, of course.

“JoJo and Koko?” Phoenix squealed as she walked by again, this time heading back to the bar. “That’s adorable!”

“It’s ridiculous is what it is.” Adam stood, grabbed the table the men were at and dragged it over to where they were all seated. “I’m Adam,” he said to Merry as he settled into a chair. “I hear you’re moving onto our pack lands.”
