“Oh, dear,” Betina said. “Are they really that bad?”

“I mean, no, not exactly. It’s just my dad’s really busy with his job and my sister’s kind of, frankly, a pain in the ass, and well—my mom washed her hands of me when I was still a baby, so, trust me. This is the best case scenario for me. Away from my family, free at last. It’s a wonderful feeling.”

“Won’t your father and sister miss you at the holidays?” Betina asked.

“Please. It’s not like they’ll be celebrating together.”

“Well, that decides it,” Agatha said. “You’ll just have to come home with us.”

“What?” Sam and Merry chorused.

“We have the perfect cabin for you on pack lands. Gigi used to stay there before she moved into the pack house with Adam,” Agatha said.

“That was back when my nephew was being a dick,” Betina said.

“Oh, but—” Merry wasn’t exactly sure what she was going to say, but she didn’t get a chance to find out because Francine whirled and called out, “Karl, call Harry and cancel Merry’s reservation. Tell him she’ll be staying with the pack.”

Karl was a couple tables over, sitting with some other men and looked entirely put out at the request. “Mom, you know Lily hates it when we do that. She accuses us of stealing their clients.”

“We’ve only done it once before,” Agatha protested.

“And Lily still hasn’t forgiven us,” Karl said. “When she found out that Gigi owned a hair salon and was giving free manicures and pedicures to all the women of the pack, not to mention dyeing their hair for free, well—let’s just say threats against the entire pack were made,” Karl said.

“So that’s why we keep getting invoices from the hotel!” Another man exclaimed.

“That’s Adam,” Sam murmured, “the alpha of our pack.”

“You’re getting invoices?” Karl asked.

“Yes, and I keep throwing them away because they don’t make any sense.”

“What do they say?”

“They’re all these weird charges, like the denial of beauty enhancement opportunities and fines for thievery and corporate espionage.

Sam snickered and muttered under his breath, “Crazy fairy,” which reminded Merry.

As entertaining as this pit stop had become, she had an actual reason for being in Jamesville and it had nothing to do with kittens or the sexy wolf she’d hoped to conscript into volunteering for her clinical sex trials.

Sex and chocolate trials.

Clinical sex and chocolate trials.

The title still needed some work.

“Fairies,” Merry announced.

“What’s that, dear?” Francine asked.

“I was planning to stay at the hotel so I could meet some of the fairies.”

“Oh, dear,” Betina said.

“They’re not exactly the friendly type, you know, and they’re not very welcoming of tourists,” Agatha said. “Well, unless you’re spending a lot of money at one of their hotels or in the mall.”

“Ooh, I’ve heard all about the fairy mall,” Merry said. “Have you guys been to it?”

“Oh, yes, and it’s glorious,” Phoenix said as she walked by, balancing a tray full of drinks.
