“Mates,” Sam muttered.

“Did you hear that, Dad?”

“Nope. Didn’t hear a thing.”

“Mates.” Sam managed to get the word out a bit more forcefully that time. He struggled to sit up, then slowly climbed to his knees.

Why was it so dark in here?

Oh, right.

He cracked his eyes open just a tiny bit and found himself staring into the amber eyes of a giant, feral cat.

He scrambled back. “What is that?”

“Oh, that’s Spike,” Merry said as she rushed over from the couch where she’d been sitting with her father. The freaking devil himself. “I’m so happy you’re awake, Sam. I was worried.”

Yeah. So worried she was sitting on the couch, leaving him to the tender mercies of a terrifying creature called Spike.

Something huge and black settled on his left shoulder. A peek to the left showed another cat, just as huge as Spike, resting its head there. He could feel its whiskers brushing across his cheek.

“Aw, Drusilla likes you.”

Those names, Spike and Drusilla, had a visceral effect on him, sending ice sliding down his spine.

Where did he know those names from?

Slowly pulling away from Drusilla, he allowed Merry to pull him to his feet. He staggered over to one of the armchairs and collapsed in it.

“So. You’re courting my daughter.”

“She’s my mate,” Sam said, “so, yes, I’m courting her.”

“Are you serious right now, daughter?”

“What?” Merry exclaimed.

“You seriously expect me to believe you’re mated to this fragile wolf?”

“I’m not fragile!” Sam had never been so offended in his life.

“You fainted twice in my presence,” Lucifer said.

No.

Absolutely not.

He could not continue to call his future father-in-law Lucifer.

It completely freaked him out!

Sam cleared his throat. “I’m sure it had nothing to do with your presence, Lucy.”

Merry let out a truly evil-sounding laugh, which made Sam grin.

Yes, he could handle this.

Lucy.
