“You saved her life.”

Redmond stood. “Come on, let’s get you two out of here.”

Swiftly, he carried Becca out of the room. I followed him, ready to take down anyone who tried to stop us. No one did, the halls still empty as per Agent White’s orders, and we made it to the car without interruptions. Lucky for them, seeing as I was in no mood to play.

“How long until she wakes?” I asked, watching as he laid her out on the back seat. We didn’t have a lot of data concerning transformations. Normally no one gets turned in the presence of a hunter.

He shrugged. “It’s different for everyone. Some wake after mere minutes, others take days. She’ll be fine.”

I exhaled. “Thank you.” I placed a hand on his arm. He looked at it in what might have been shock. Then he closed the distance between us, tilting my head back and he kissed me. I sucked in a breath, my lips parting in surprise. Weirdly enough he didn’t taste like blood. Or feel dead. As he should have.

“I wanted to do this the moment I laid eyes on you,” he said, taking a step back.

“Funny, all I remember is you staring at my boobs.”

“I did. They are remarkable.”

Despite myself and the horrible situation, I laughed. “Can I trust you to keep her safe? There is something I need to do.”

“Of course.”

Standing on tiptoes to match his greater height, I pressed my lips on his again. “Thank you.”

Then I went back inside to put an end to everything, starting with that horrible giant Sprout that was still plugged into the machine. I smashed it to pieces, before setting fire to the building.

I fucking hate Brussel Sprouts.

Chapter Eight

I watched as Becca obliterated one of the training dummies with a bolt of light magic and couldn’t help but feel immensely proud of her. Despite my standing a good distance away I could feel the heat on my face. She gone from producing small wisps of light that just glowed prettily to invoking intense heat that rivalled a volcano.

Remarkable. She’d always been amazing, but her magic had been too weak for her to come on the hunt with me. The ritual that had been designed to make her a vampire hunter had also failed, which is why she’d ended up being stuck in the office and lab. Now I had to work my ass off to keep up with her. A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth.

Cool lips caressed my neck and equally cold hands slid over my bare arms.

“How is she doing?” Redmond asked at my ear as he nuzzled me.

He’d helped hide us away from the agency. And we’d, ah, well, started dating. If you could call boinking every spare minute of the day dating, then we were doing it. After having my sister transformed into what I lovingly called a mutant, I’d quickly gotten over my aversion of vampires. Not that I’d let him put those sharp teeth anywhere near my jugular. Okay fine, I let him bite me. I intended that to be a one-time thing to prove to myself it would be horribly painful and monstrous.

Turns out it felt pretty good. Too good.

After the events at the Institute, we’d been in hiding for, well, blowing up the whole damn building and killing two agents. I’d gone inside and gathered all the evidence I could find. Then I’d dragged the unconscious bodies of the two other hunters outside, not that those two ungrateful assholes had thanked me even after waking up. They’d cursed me up one side and down the other.

I’d left Stryker and White where they were. No need to risk breaking a nail carting them outside. They were dead anyway and I hated them for what they’d done to Becca and to Redmond’s fiancée Tara. They didn’t deserve a proper burial. Even being barbequed was too good for them. Assholes.

After tying up Eugene – the guard from the gate who turned out to be just as much a traitor as the rest – the same way I’d tied up the other two, I’d made sure no one else was in the building before setting fire to it. Watching it burn down didn’t make me feel better. Instead, I had the feeling as if one door was closing and I was locked out of everything I’ve ever known.

I’d debated if I should send copies of all the files I’d found to every agency in the world, but ultimately decided against it. The risk of another White and Stryker rearing their greedy heads was just too big.

I knew it might get out eventually. I’d left three agents who knew too much alive. If anyone believed their crazy stories, we might have more dead and missing supernaturals in our future. I just hoped against hope that they keep their mouths shut. And that no one created another Sprout of Alyria. But honestly, why sprouts? Sprouts sucked.

I stole another glance at Becca, then reconsidered. Maybe some sprouts were alright.

I shook my head. We’d cross that bridge once we got to it. Right now, I was here with Becca and Redmond, and all was well.

“Fantastic, thanks to you,” I replied to Redmond, finally jerking out of my thoughts and remembering that he’d asked me something.

“You’re training her, so this is your doing.”
