“Besides, we’ve matched wolves and cats before, lots of times,” Tivali said.

“I suppose,” Soraya said. “I just didn’t have time to research these wolves, so I don’t really know whether they’re trustworthy.”

“They’ll be fine,” Bygul said. “Those bears are two of my very first mate-matches.”

“Really?” Tivali asked. “What cats did you match them with?”

“None. These were unintentional matches. I was working halfway across the country on an entirely different match and those two black bears kept getting in the way of what I was trying to accomplish, so I used goddess magic to send them here, to open their own Shenanigans bar. That one action set into motion a series of matings I could never have predicted. It’s what opened my eyes to the true power of our magic and how we could use it to match more than just cats to their human companions.”

“So that’s why you added mate-matching to your services,” Tivali said.

“That’s why. It all started right here in Jamesville.”

“You know, Sam,” Pete said, “You should go over and introduce yourself.”

“What? Why?”

“You were just complaining that your mate hasn’t shown up yet,” Pete said.

“He’s right,” Adam said. “What if that’s your mate over there? What if she just waltzed into your life, exactly the way you’ve been hoping, but instead of rushing over there, you’re just sitting here on your ass, letting the moment pass you by?”

“Are you serious right now?” Sam demanded. “Did you not hear her talking about serial killers when she walked in? Not to mention the boxful of kittens. Why would you wish that kind of mate on me?”

Max snickered. “Maybe we misheard her.”

“Yeah,” Cole said. “Maybe she said serial kittens, not killers.”

“Give me a break,” Sam groaned. “There’s no such thing as a serial kitten and even if there was, you know that’s not what she said.”

“Still,” Karl said. “This could be your chance, dude.”

“You should definitely go over and introduce yourself,” Max said.

Sam let out a rumble of annoyance, but the truth was, his wolf had been urging him to go to the woman ever since the door first opened, even before she spoke.

That first gust of wind that had blown through the bar had carried with it a scent of something purely divine, something that had caught his wolf’s attention and set him to howling for more.

The entire situation made Sam appreciate that old saying about being careful what you wished for. He’d made the wish and now he was knee-deep in the consequences.

Chapter Three

“WHAT ARE THEIR names?” The waitress, who had introduced herself as Phoenix, asked.

“I haven’t named them yet. Well, except for these two.” Merry reached into the box and scooped out the last two kittens who were wrestling inside it. “Meet Spike and Drusilla.”

“How in the world can you tell them apart?” Phoenix asked.

“Spike has amber eyes and Drusilla has green ones,” Merry explained.

Phoenix examined the kittens she was holding, then protested, ”But these four have amber or green eyes too.”

“Eh, don’t know what to tell you.” Merry wasn’t about to admit that she couldn’t tell them apart to save her life. She’d just done a quick check when lifting the kittens into her arms to make sure one was a boy and the other a girl and since they were—Spike and Drusilla!

Tomorrow, it was entirely possible two different kittens would have those names.

“Phoenix, stop hogging all the kittens.” One of the women stole two from Phoenix, cuddling them close for a moment before passing them to two other women standing nearby.

She then took a third kitten for herself, leaving Phoenix with only one.
