Phoenix scowled, then cuddled the remaining kitten close. “Don’t worry, little guy, I won’t let her steal you like she did your siblings.”

“You’re so adorable,” the thief crooned to the kitten in her arms.

“No, Lara.” A man stomped across the bar and glared at her.

Something about the way he moved and the growl in his voice screamed shifter to Merry.

“And no to your sisters too.” He transferred his glare to the other women. “We’ve already got three cats running around the apartment. We don’t need any more.”

“But, they’re so cute, Karl. Look at them!” Lara and her sisters held up their kittens, but Karl just growled at them.

Definitely a shifter.

Lara sighed. “I suppose you’re right. Ash probably wouldn’t appreciate me bringing home another familiar.” She returned her kitten to the box and Phoenix promptly reclaimed him.

Lara turned to her sisters. “Maybe we can get Aunt Dory to adopt a couple.”

“Seriously?” Karl exclaimed. “Do you want those kittens to get mauled?”

One of the other women groaned. “He’s right. Aunt Dory’s cats are so territorial.” She whirled and called across the room, “Cole—”

“No!” One of the men shouted back.

“Damnit. Fine. They’re so cute, though.” She gave one last cuddle to the kitten in her arms before returning him to the box. Her sister did the same.

Phoenix scooped them both up again.

“Thanks for letting us pet them, Merry,” Lara said.

“Yes, thanks,” her sisters chorused.

The three turned and walked away, talking loudly about their mates owing them big-time for giving up those adorable, precious little babies.

Karl rolled his eyes, hesitated, glanced at the women walking away, then reached out and gave each kitten a surreptitious scratch on the head.

“I saw that,” Lara called without turning around.

Karl let out a low growl, muttering, “Just my luck to have a witch for mate,” then hurried after her.

“I love these kittens,” Phoenix exclaimed. “They’re so soft and playful. Can I have them, Merry? Please?”

Merry shrugged. “I suppose. If you really want them.”

“Yay!” Phoenix whirled to face the bar. “Travis, we’re adopting four kittens!”

The bartender just grinned back at her.

“Unless—” She whirled back around. ”Gigi—“

“Sorry, but no.” Gigi was sitting at the table, playing with one of the kittens.

“Oh, but—”

“I’m adopting this one,” Gigi said quietly.

“But what about JoJo?”

“Who’s JoJo?” Merry asked.
