I could give him this.

It was Valentine’s Day, after all.

* * *

Less than fifteen minutes later, Blake turned off the main road and parked. He didn’t say a word as he got out of the car and came around to my side.

“Shall we?” He offered his hand, and I climbed out of the car, my eyes taking in the sight before us.

“What is this place?”

“The garden of roses.”

I could see that.

Past the sign lay row upon row of perfectly tended rose bushes in various shades of red and pink.

It was a sight to behold.

“It’s beautiful. But I don’t understand.” I hesitated. “What are we doing here?”

“I thought you’d like it.”

“I do.” My frown deepened. “But where is everyone? Why is it so quiet? We’re the only ones here.”

Blake laughed softly. “That’s kind of the point, Pen.”

I stared at him blankly. And then like a wrecking ball, realization slammed into me.

The roses.

The twinkling lights lining the pagoda off in the distance.

Blake’s strange behavior.

My heart started to race, remembering Marissa’s slip of the tongue.

No.

He wouldn’t.

Blake was many things, but he hadn’t completely lost his mind.

“Pen?”

I shook my head, blinking at him. “Uh, yeah?”

“Is everything okay?”

“Yes, I mean, gosh, it’s just so pretty.”

“Come on.” He tugged me forward grinning from ear-to-ear. “You haven’t seen nothing yet.”

Nervous energy hummed through me as Blake guided me around the gardens, giving me time to appreciate the beauty of the flowers.

“How do they keep them so vibrant in winter?” I asked, trying to take my mind off everything else.

Maybe Blake wasn’t going to do what I thought he was.
