Maybe Marissa had it wrong.

He was just trying to be romantic.

Wasn’t he?

“Penny?” His fingers grazed my cheek and I realized we had stopped walking. “Sorry, yeah?”

“Are you sure you’re okay, babe? You acting a little weird.”

Me?

I was acting weird.

“No, no.” I smiled. “I’m fine. Just surprised, I guess. I thought I’d be enjoying my steak at Duke’s right about now.”

Blake’s face blanched and ran a brisk hand over his head. “Wait here.”

If I didn’t know better, he seemed nervous.

Blake didn’t get nervous.

Ever.

I studied him for a few seconds but when he didn’t move, I glanced around the empty park and said, “What?”

“Wait here.” He tugged me over to a bench and waited for me to sit. “I’ll be right back.”

“Blake,” I called after him, but he was already walking away from me. “You can’t just leave me out here.”

“I’ll be two minutes.” He spun around, walking backwards, and flashed me another gorgeous smile. “Two minutes.”

As soon as he disappeared out of sight, I rummaged in my purse for my cell phone and texted Marissa.

Penny: What do you know?

She replied immediately.

Marissa: I know nothing!

Penny: Marissa, this is serious. He brought me to a rose garden, a freaking rose garden.

Marissa: Is it pretty?

Penny: Marissa!!! Tell me he isn’t going to propose. I’m not ready, it’s too soon…

I waited, my cell phone gripped tightly in my hand.

It had been two and a half years since Blake and I reunited. But so much had happened. Our pasts, the people we had become.

We’d worked hard at finding ourselves, learning to be us again, over the last eighteen months. But marriage was a big step.

Huge.

I had barely gotten used to being with Blake again, being intimate with him… after everything. And then there was learning to fit into Blake’s lifestyle, his family and business associates.

Before him, I’d been living in a damp ridden apartment above a Chinese takeout. My life had done a complete one-eighty, and I was still adjusting.Still holding back, a little voice whispered.

“Now I couldn’t arrange take out from Duke’s, but I think you’ll like this.” Blake appeared carrying the brown paper bag from earlier. “But first, come with me.”
