“I guess that’s my cue to head back.” Blake moved behind me, the tension from earlier descending over the cabin. “Walk me out?” He gave me a pleading look.

I nodded, ignoring Marissa’s amusement. Her gaze burned a hole in the side of my face as I followed him out of the cabin.

The door clicked shut behind us, and I paused on the balcony, not wanting to drag out the goodbye any longer than necessary. We would be seeing each other tomorrow.

“What, you’re not going to escort me back to my cabin?” Blake said playfully, causing me to half smile.

“Go on, get out of here,” I said. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

He hesitated, the air crackling between us. That invisible tether stretching taut, tugging deeply in my stomach.

“I can’t leave without doing this.” Blake retraced his steps back up to where I was standing.

My heart was pounding so hard in my chest that I felt lightheaded. Surely, after everything, he wasn’t going to try to kiss me?

He reached for me, his fingers brushing along jaw, up to my cheek and into my hairline. He leaned into me, and I froze, unable to move.

Was this really going to happen?

More importantly, did I want it to?

“Blake,” I whispered.

Or maybe I whimpered.

It was hard to think with him gazing at me like that.

The way he used to.

He inched closer, and I braced myself, knowing that if he kissed me, I would let him.

But his lips never touched mine, instead they swept across my cheek, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to my skin. It was so innocent and yet, warmth pooled in my stomach, and I knew without a doubt that I was blushing from my neck up.

“Good night, Penny.” His mouth tipped in a small smile as he retreated.

“Good night, Blake,” I mouthed, still rooted to the spot.

I held my palm to my cheek and watched him disappear between the row of cabins and out of sight.

“Spill.” Marissa pounced on me the second I entered the cabin.

“What?”

“Oh, come on, you can’t pull that with me. I walked in on something earlier, and I want details, Penny Wilson.” She grinned. “You’ve been holding out on me.”

“I…” The words—the truth—died on the tip of my tongue.

I paced the room a couple of times before inhaling a deep breath and climbing under the comforter. “Blake was my everything,” I admitted, the words splintering something inside me.

“You don’t say. Those lyrics, wow.” She let out a dreamy sigh. “He was talking about you, right? You’re the penny in his song. His lucky penny?” Marissa sat cross-legged on her bed and rolled her neck.

“I’m lucky Penny.”

“Wow. This is… Holy shit balls. I knew there was history between the two of you, but I had no idea you were star-crossed lovers or something.”

“Star-crossed lovers? Really, Marissa? What are we, twelve?”
