“Hold on. I’ve got you.”

Pulling my jacket off, I helped her put it on before kissing her hard on the lips.

“Are you okay?”

“Yeah. It was pretty scary. Wait.” She paused. “How did you know? I told Caleb not to bother you.”

“Go ahead, Luc,” Alec baited me. “Tell her how you knew.”

“We’ll get to that in a minute. What do you mean you told Caleb not to call me?”

“Oh my God, you didn’t. The cameras,” she guessed. “My landlady wasn’t the one who wanted them installed, was she?”

My head dropped to my chest. “No, babe. But in my defense, you’d just been attacked. My overwhelming need to protect you made rational thinking a thing of the past.”

“So you’re claiming temporary insanity?” she probed.

“Nothing temporary about my feelings for you.”

“Nice save, del Toro,” she laughed.

“Are you insane?” Alec yelled. “You could’ve been killed.”

“I didn’t even break a nail, hot shot,” Quin snipped. “Calm the hell down.”

“I’ll calm down when you stop being so goddamn…”

“Don’t stop there del Toro. Say it.”

“Reckless.”

With that one word, her whole demeanor flipped. If I hadn’t been paying attention, I’d have never seen it and by the way she stiffened at my side, Emory noticed too. Quin went from fun-loving straight to defeated in a flash. She’d completely shut down.

“Fratello.” I stepped between them. “Back off and take a beat.”

His head snapped to mine, fire blazing in his eyes. I understood his concern, even agreed with him to a point, but berating her was not the way to get his point across. I raised my eyebrow and tilted my head in her direction. When he looked, his quick inhale was all I needed to know he understood.

“Firefly,” he addressed her. “I’m sorry. I was worried.”

“Whatever,” she blew him off, turning to Emory. “I’m exhausted. Who knew swinging a bat was such a workout. I’m gonna head home.”

“Let one of us drive you,” I implored.

“Nah. I’ve got my car.”

“Your car’s a piece of shit, Quin,” River added.

“But it’s my piece of shit. Later boys and girls.”

She glared at Alec when she walked past, then waved a hand over her shoulder at the rest of us without looking back.

“She’s badass,” Emory declared. “Not one ounce of fear.”

*****

“THAT’S IT, BABE,”I groaned. “Squeeze a little harder.”

I’d brought us to the shower to scrub off the remnants of the day, but when Emory dropped to her knees, her hand circling the base of my dick, my plans rapidly changed. Her soulful eyes connected with mine just before she leaned forward to lick me from root to tip. My back was taking the majority of the water, but a little has slipped by to dampen her hair.
