I retreat, clearing my throat, as I straighten my back—only to find Alexander casting me a curious look through the rear-view mirror. We have barely moved since I last paid attention to the street, and even though I’d never admit it, I’ve never enjoyed being stuck in traffic more than I am right now.

„Oh, I know!” Claire cries out. „How about Omega? It would work for a girl or a boy, and it would be a nice counterbalance to Alpha. A beginning and an end, both matter equally, of course. Omega is the conclusion of everything, the only unique real number to satisfy the equation that is this little family.”

Is she trying to kill me with this? A storm is raging inside me as she looks at me now, beaming with joy, while she talks about numbers as if they were artwork. They are, of course, but most people don’t know that. They can’t see or understand it.

And this girl does. She is everything I could ever want in a woman, and I can’t fucking have her.

„You don’t like it?” She asks, her expression lined with doubt.

„No, I like it,” I say in a hoarse voice. „It’s perfect.”

Just like you.

Chapter 15

Claire

This is where he lives?

My throat has been feeling tighter and tighter the closer we get to his home. Back Bay is a dream come true, lined with iconic brownstones that come with a hefty price tag. I strolled through the area several times when I first moved to Boston, but I never thought I’d ever meet anyone who could afford to live here.

I try not to stare with my mouth open when the car comes to a halt in front of a luxurious townhouse right in the heart of this affluent neighborhood. His driver jumps out of the car and opens the doors for both of us. He offers to take the cat carrier for me as well, but I decline and keep the kittens close to me as I turn toward the house. Its façade is adorned with rich, red-brown brick with a grand entrance, framed by detailed wrought iron railings. The large windows, evenly spaced and framed with elegant molding, punctuate the brick façade. Each window is adorned with custom-designed shutters, painted in black.

„This is where you live?” I ask dumbly.

He side-eyes me, while he makes his way up the stairs, keys jingling in his hand. His driver gets back into the car and drives off to God knows where, leaving the two of us alone.

I swallow dryly as I follow Professor Jones up the stairs, the knuckles of my fingers white with tension as my hand tightens around the handle of the carrier. The kittens are meowing louder now, as if they know that they’re about to be released from their tiny prison.

I have to stop myself from gasping when he opens the door and beckons for me to step inside. The entrance area is large and airy, with pristine white walls that enhance the natural light streaming in through the front door, casting a soft, welcoming glow across the marble floor. Large, polished marble tiles reflect the ambient light and a strategically placed area rug anchors the entire space, introducing a layer of comfort.

Behind my back, I hear him closing the front door, and I carefully lower the carrier with the kittens down to the floor. They’re going crazy now, meowing louder than ever and jumping against the lattice door.

„Alright, alright, let’s get you out of there,” I say, before unlocking the door.

„Wait, what are you—” Professor Jones cries out behind me, stopping mid-sentence, when he realizes that it’s too late.

As soon as I open the little door, the first two kittens stumble out of the box—Alpha and Omega, it appears. Striking green eyes stare at me in fear, when I go down on my knees, to check on the remaining kitten. Pi seems to be a lot more timid and shy than her siblings.

A moment later, I notice Professor Jones's polished shoes right next to me.

„Why did you just let them out like that?” he bellows. „I don’t want them running around the house, they could get lost or hurt, and they’ve been clawing at my couch all night yesterday. It’s completely ruined.”

I look up at him and feel a wave of heat rushing through my core. He looks so handsome, even when he’s frowning, and something about this feels so right—me, kneeling next to him, with his commanding gaze towering above me.

„Do you want to punish me?” I reply, surprised at myself, when I playfully bite my lower lip to tease him. „Have I been a bad girl?”

There’s utter shock on his face now, and for a moment it looks like he’s about to grab me by the arm and pull me up on my feet.

„This isn’t funny,” he tells me through gritted teeth.

„It wasn’t supposed to be funny, Sir.”

„Stop it!” he yells at me, and I flinch in surprise when he takes a step back, distancing himself from me. „You have to get out of here, right this fucking second.”

„Or else?” I ask, as I slowly get back up on my feet.

My heart is racing with such fervor that I’m feeling dizzy, and my palms are beginning to sweat. What am I doing? I’ve never been this brazen, and this eager for a man’s attention. I’ve never acted this way before.
