But I’ve also never met a man like him. A man who is more than I could have ever hoped for, a man who knows exactly what I want—what Ineed.

I know that this is dangerous, but I’ve never wanted a taste of the forbidden fruit this badly.

His lips are pressed into a thin line, and I notice that his hand is curled into a fist, while he pins me down with an intense stare. He’s just about to say something, when his phone starts ringing, causing both of us to jerk up in shock.

He hisses something under his breath and checks the display, before looking at me, then down at the floor, where shy little Pi is now cautiously crawling out of the carrier, her green eyes looking up at us in fear.

„Go!” he hisses at me, pointing toward the door, while he moves further into the house. „Be careful not to let the cats get out when you leave.”

Before I can respond to his commands, he answers the call and disappears into the back of the house, leaving me alone with Pi who is now sniffing my shoes.

„Does he really think I’ll just leave?” I ask the tiny kitten.

She doesn’t respond, but I hear a meow coming from behind me, and realize that Zeta, the mother cat, is still locked in her carrier.

„Oh, you poor thing,” I say, as I hurry over to her to unlock the lattice door.

She flits out the carrier the moment the door is open, greeting her kitten with a few licks across the forehead. She meows again, and a moment later, I see Omega plodding through the entry area and toward the stairs to the left.

„Oh, so you’re a boy, just like your brother Alpha,” I say, when I notice the evidence at his behind. „Speaking of Alpha, where is your brother?”

The kitten ignores me and continues his way to the stairs that are leading down to the basement. He pauses at the top, peeking over the edge as he stops to assess the height between each step.

„Oh, Omega, be careful, maybe you shouldn’t—”

But it’s too late. The tiny kitten loses its footing and starts tumbling down the stairs into the dark.

„Omega, no!” I start running after him without thinking twice, my heart hammering with worry.

There’s little light downstairs, and I move as quickly as possible while watching my steps, worried that I could step on the little kitten in the dark. A faint meow echoes from the corridor beneath me, followed by a second one—from a different cat.

„Alpha?” I ask. „Are you down here, too?”

I reach the floor on the lower level, and find myself in a dark hallway bathed in shadows, as there’s only a hint of light coming through from the first floor. I can see two doors to my right, and an archway that leads into something that looks like an open storage area.

Meows are coming out of the dark where the doors are, and I slowly make my way over there.

„Omega?” I ask. „Where are you?”

A moment later, I feel something warm and furry at my foot, and when I look down, I find the black kitten, who is playing with my shoelace. Smiling, I go down on my knees and lift him up in my arms, to check if he hurt himself when tumbling down the stairs. Omega meows and writhes in my hands, but appears to be unhurt.

„Lucky little rascal,” I whisper at the kitten. „Now let’s look for your brother, is he here, too?”

I take a step further into the dark and I hear the pitter-patter of little paws across the floor right next to my feet. I look down and find Alpha staring up at me while crying out a long and demanding meow.

„Oh, there you are!” I say, as I go down to pick him up as well.

But Alpha escapes my grip and disappears into the dark ahead of us. I realize that the corridor is a lot longer than I thought at first, and there’s another door at the far end of it—a black door. All the other doors I have seen in this house so far have been pristine white, except for this one. Squinting, I move further, and when my eyes adjust to the darkness I realize that there’s a little panel with a pin keyboard next to the door. Is that some sort of high-security lock? But why would he…

„What the hell are you doing down here?”

I almost cry out in shock, when I spin around on my heels, holding the kittens close to my chest. He’s standing right behind me, his face partly hidden in the shadows. But I can still see the fire in his eyes, and a palpable fury that’s radiating from his entire body like heat.

He does not want me down here, that’s obvious.

But why?
