“Shouldn’t we try to stop this?” Raina asked anxiously. How had this gotten so out of control?

“Movu could end this with a word,” Kern assured her. “I learned verbal compulsions from him.”

She’d experienced exactly what that meant so she tried to relax and simply observe. It was obvious that both sides were not really trying to harm each other. This was more like a demonstration or a scrimmage than a fight.

The Pyronese effortlessly blocked everything the Altorians threw at them but one lucky shot from a guard’s rifle creased Zuri’s upper arm. She cried out and both her mates roared in protective fury. Their expressions hardened and their posture became threatening. Aldoron whipped his arm to the side and all three guards slammed into the wall on the far side of the training room. The one who had hurt Zuri slumped to the floor, clearly unconscious.

Movu gathered Air before him, spinning it and forming it into a compact tornado.

“Enough!” Zevon shouted from the doorway. “Release the storm.”

Movu glared at Zevon then gradually dispersed the energy.

“What the fuck is going on here?” Zevon asked to the room at large.

“Theseintruderswere not cleared for arrival,” the lead guard explained. He knelt beside his unconscious friend and glared openly at the Pyronese triad. “They just appeared, which set off the new alarm system.”

“What new alarm system?” Cylex wanted to know.

“It continually monitors heat signatures,” Zevon told him as he strode across the room. “If the number changes without warning, security is notified. The proximity sensors don’t work with anyone who can Flow, so I had to think of something else.”

This was a reaction to her kidnapping, Raina realized. Zevon was ensuring that nothing like that ever happened again. The president could be annoying at times, but he really was trying to be a good leader.

Zevon moved to Zuri and his expression softened. “Do you need medical attention?”

She shook her head. “It has already stopped bleeding. It will be gone by morning.”

“Very good. I apologize for the misunderstanding. From the guards’ perspective, they were doing their job.”

She accepted the statement with a tense nod.

“Return to your posts,” Zevon told the guards without shifting his gaze from the visitors. “Everyone else continue training.”

“President Zevon, this is Movu Surcatt, my mentor,” Kern introduced.

Movu dipped his head so Zevon echoed the Pyronese greeting rather than holding out his arm. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“These are the other members of my triad,” Movu continued the introductions. “Mistress Zuri and Lord Aldoron.”

“Are all three of you Pyronese?” Zevon wanted to know.

“We are,” Zuri admitted. “I didn’t realize that would be a problem.”

“Your welcome would have been much warmer if you had simply let us know you were coming,” Zevon responded. “How does the Temple of Air maintain security when so many on your planet can Flow?”

“We do not reside at the Temple of Air,” Movu told him. “Our home is Fortress Ellak, but I understand your concern.”

Zevon’s brows arched at the evasion, but he didn’t press. Instead, he said, “Fortress Ellak. Isn’t that… are any of you Wraiths? I have heard about them for decades, but I have never met one.”

“Well, now you have met four,” Movu said. “Though Kern chooses not to use the title, he has completed his training as a Wraith.”

Cylex and Raina both looked at their controller. This was the first they’d heard of Kern training to become a Wraith. They had both presumed all of his training took place at the Temple of Air.

“Is there a specific reason for your visit?” Zevon asked, his tone slightly accusatory.

Rather than answer Zevon directly, Movu turned to Kern. “Udora told us that you had finally formed a triad. We are thrilled for you, but are we not important enough to notify personally? That’s hurtful.”

Kern sighed. “I keep meaning to comm you, but training has been grueling.” He motioned toward Cylex. “This is Cylex, my source.”
