“The conduits would benefit from the experience,” she agreed. “But I’m just not sure Arcon would thank you for the suggestion.”

“He trained Eden as a favor to us,” Kyrex explained. “Arcon doesn’t usually work with conduits.”

“Arcon has never worked for me before,” Zevon stressed with a cocky smile.

“What are you going to do with Laidon?” Neloff wanted to know.

Neloff was usually more understanding than Kyrex, but Eden sensed resentment radiating off both equally. They reached the main bank of elevators and the four stepped into one of the cars.

“I’ll leave the final decision to the board of governors, but I’m going to push for Rorkesh.”

“What or where is Rorkesh?” Eden asked as the elevator doors slid open.

They strode out onto the wide walkway that gradually spiraled to the top of the spire. “Rorkesh is a unique penal facility. The Rorkeshians believe in a combination of punishment and rehabilitation that has been surprisingly effective in changing behavior. Repeat offenses of those who graduated from Rorkesh’s programs are a fraction of those who are incarcerated in ordinary prisons.”

“How long does the program last?”

“Between three and fifteen years,” Zevon explained. “And relocating is mandatory at the end of each program. The Rorkeshians have found that it is nearly impossible for anyone to significantly change their behavior unless they change their surroundings and their friends.”

She nodded. Without knowing the specifics of the program, she couldn’t decide if she was a fan or not.

“I will also insist that one of the conditions of Laidon’s release is that he will never have contact with a conduit for as long as he lives,” Zevon added.

Now that was a concept she could get behind. Eden smiled. “That works for me and I know Raina will be relieved.”

“We set out to secure an alliance and ended up triggering a mutiny,” Neloff said as they reached Zevon’s office. “Did we help or hurt the situation?”

“My instincts say help, but I’ve yet to meet Soro,” Zevon replied.

“His frustration with Laidon was real, as was his shock and opposition to the attack on us,” Kyrex told him. “I think he’ll make a much better leader than Laidon ever did.”

“Time will tell.” Zevon triggered the door but remained in the doorway rather than going inside. “This new development will doubtlessly set my plans back by a few days. I know you three just bonded. If you’d like to sneak away until we’re ready to move against Jevara, I’ll make sure you’re notified in time to return from Houkdi.”

“Much appreciated,” Kyrex said with a warm smile.

“Regardless of the final outcome of the alliance, your mission was an undeniable success. Now, get out of here.” He stepped into his office and the door slid shut behind him.

“I’m really starting to like that guy,” Eden decided.

“Is that so?” Neloff reached down and pinched her ass.

“I thought we’d leave as soon as our ship could be readied for another voyage, but maybe we need to linger long enough to remind you that you have two possessive mates.”

“I haven’t forgotten that I have two amazing mates, and never will. However,” Eden paused dramatically, “I don’t see why the reminder can’t take place on the ship. We will have several hours of free time with minimal chances of interruptions.”

“Oh,epowki, I love the way you think.” Kyrex swept her into his arms and claimed her mouth in a passionate kiss. When he released her, Neloff was there and tasted her lips just as thoroughly.

By the time they let her go, Eden felt warm and tingly. They each took one of her hands as they headed back down the spiraling walkway. Eden smiled contentedly, her mind filling with all the ways they could possess her willing body as they flew to their home on Houkdi.

The End
