A ping on my laptop drew my attention.

WingMan:When should I pick up the parcels?

I looked over at the pile of color-coded envelopes on the table at the door. Each one to be delivered while I was out of town. Of course, if she was not staying at the new house, she would not see them until she got back. She would know that I knew exactly when she wasn’t at home. The guy wouldn’t go in of course. Not only would he set off all sorts of alarms that could eventually lead to someone checking his internet history. But I didn’t want the little idiot anywhere near Evie’s things. It was bad enough that asshole Moore got to see and touch her things. That he got to see her in her underwear. She probably choked on his dick so often. We all knew that she had already spread for him. Everyone spoke about what a cute couple they were.

Another ping reminded me that I was dwelling on things too long.

WingMan:??

G:I will contact you once I have done the drop off. Do not rush me.

WingMan:Sure, but you’re not my only client. I do need to plan.

That was a load of bullshit.

G:WTF do you need to plan for?

WingMan:Do you think you’re the only one who doesn’t want to be seen by me? You’re all the same. I get it, if I cannot ID you, it doesn’t matter if the cops catch me.

As much as I hated to admit it, the man was right. I wanted to make sure that he couldn’t ID me. Not that he would live that long anyway.

G:Fine. You can pick up the parcel after six pm tomorrow evening. I will have the instructions written on a sheet for you as well.

WingMan:If that makes you comfortable, then do it. But I’ve been doing this a long time, I’ve never not been able to follow the agreed upon instructions.

I had already been over the instructions with him while we had messaged each other. He would collect the envelopes from a Post Box he had in San Diego. He used it often and there was no way it would be linked back to me. Each envelope was numbered, and he needed to deliver it to Everly and Moore’s house in the right order. One envelope for each day I was out of town. He had about a month’s worth of envelopes, not that I would need that many. I would be back in town long before he ran out of messages to deliver. But I needed him to have a false sense of security. If he thought I would be longer he wouldn’t see me coming.

WingMan:And the money?

I sighed as I opened my banking app. He wouldn’t have time to spend the money I was paying him, but if I didn’t pay him, he would not make the deliveries.

With more than a little annoyance, I transferred ten thousand dollars. The guy wasn’t joking when he introduced himself as the most expensive courier on the west coast. I doubted he was completely accurate, but it was a close thing.

G:I just transferred. I sincerely hope you’re worth it.

Wingman:You are all the same. Expecting me to be the most honest person while I am doing your shady bidding.

G:As long as you do as I ask and keep your mouth shut, I don’t care how shady you are.

The asshole sent another message, but I didn’t have time to check it. I still had work to do, and I would be leaving town in the next twenty-four hours. I didn’t have much to pack, more equipment than anything else, but I had things I still needed to gather.

As I packed a few shirts into a duffle bag, my eyes landed on the photo next to my bed. The one I always hid when visitors came over. It was a picture of Eve on the night I met her. She’d been with her friends at the bar, the night of the release party. It was my first time at The Dane, and I was so grateful to be working in the industry that it never occurred to me I would meet the woman of my dreams. She’d spoken to me briefly before she’d gone into the bar. I thought we had a connection, but that asshole Moore came along and she had all but forgotten me. Even when she left the hotel that Monday morning, her head was so filled with him that she didn’t even notice me on the way out.

I really thought that when that man left, he was out of her life for good. But he was like gum at the bottom of my shoe. Just grimy and annoying as he just stuck around. I also got the impression that he would not give up once Evie was finally mine. The time may come that I would need to get rid of him, but that would have to wait. I would need the threat of harming him to keep Everly inline. Her attachment to the man would need to be severed, naturally, but I could use it until I had her compliance.

With everything I needed packed, I got ready for my day. I checked my watch, and I still had time. The drive was not far and I could use the time in the car to get my head right. I haddone a good job thus far of hiding my love for Eve. The last thing I needed was Moore being suspicious of me. I wasn’t sure if I’d made it onto his radar, the asshole was suspicious of everyone Eve came into contact with.

My drive was pleasant. If it wasn’t for the fact that I needed to separate Eve from her friends, it would have been an ideal place to settle down. I wasn’t sure where we would settle, but I could always go back to San Francisco. She’d love it there. I would build her a studio and I would protect her. Our life would be perfect. But first, I needed to see my contract through.

I stepped out of my car and walked into the building. It wasn’t a bad place to work. Especially considering the kind of work I did.

I walked through the lobby remembering the first time I had been there. The day of my interview. “Good Morning, Sue.”

“Morning, Trey.” She plastered on that smile, but I knew she was hiding something. “They’re about to start a strategy meeting upstairs.”
