While my thoughts and emotions have calmed a bit just from the small message exchange with Connor, I still have some feelings to work through.

Chapter Seven

CONNOR

By the time I’m able to pick up my phone again, it’s lunchtime. The team working on the Quellin Project has plans to work late, and I had planned to stay with them and even order dinner as a show of support for the team, but after re-reading Hadley’s messages, I begin to second-guess my plans. I walk out to my assistant’s desk to discuss the dinner plans for the group tonight.

“Hey, boss man. What can I do for you?” Jordan asks eagerly as I approach.

He’s a good kid, sharply dressed and fresh out of college, hoping to work his way up the corporate ladder. He makes a great assistant, and I can definitely see him moving up in the company.

“Hi, Jordan. Would you mind finding out what everyone would like this evening? I was planning on staying and delivering dinner myself, but I may have to leave earlier than I planned tonight.” After handing him my American Express Black card, I turn back toward my desk.

Opening up my new favorite contact, A Mhuirnín, I press call and wait with bated breath for her to answer.

“Hello?” Hadley’s voice comes on the line, soft and confused.

Fuck, I forgot to send her my number before I called.

Clearing my throat, I quickly reply, “A mhuirnín, it’s Connor.”

Even over the phone, I can hear the soft sigh of contentment escape her lips. I could listen to that sound forever.

“Oh, hello!” She sounds much more chipper. “I didn’t expect a call. Usually, I don’t answer numbers I don’t know, but something told me I should.” She giggles shyly. “Glad I listened to my gut.”

Be still, my heart! This woman is everything.

“I’m sorry, gorgeous. I realized after I hit the call button that I didn’t give you my number. I half-expected my call to get rejected. I’m so happy to hear your voice.” I pause for a moment, contemplating if I’m moving too fast for her. “I was thinking, since you had a rough morning, I’d love to take you out again tonight. If you’d be interested, of course.”

“I would love to, but Ryan and Kat are taking me to Ignite, the new night club that just opened last week.” She sighs. “Would you like to have lunch tomorrow? I would like to see you again.”

“Of course, a thaisce.” I smile into the phone. “I’m glad your friends are going to make your day better. If you ladies drink too much, please call me. No matter the time. I just want to make sure you all get home safe.”

“Thank you, Connor.” I can hear the crack in her voice, like she isn’t used to someone showing her they care.

Jesus, what is happening in this woman’s life that she is unaccustomed to a simple gesture of kindness? Her husband must be a real arse.

“Well, I need to get a few things done before I get ready. I’ll text you later, if that’s okay?”

“I would be heartbroken if you didn’t,” I chuckle. “Have a wonderful night, a mhuirnín.”

She disconnects the call before I pull my phone from my ear. The way I would like to tear her husband apart. He has effectively broken her. Putting my phone down, I go back to put my dinner order in with the rest of the team.

It’s probably a good thing Hadley has plans. As much as I’d like to be the one to resolve whatever caused her earlier distress, I could use this extra time in the office to review proposals for how to expand our reach this year. The company has been growing with no problems. The tech industry is always growing, so long as you continue to grow with the industry. In a field where the only constant is change, it can sometimes be a struggle to stay relevant.

Around six p.m., I hear the ping of a text notification. When I pick up my phone, my lips twitch into yet another smile. Damn, I’ve been doing that a lot since the first message I received from her.

A Mhuirnín:

How does this look?

Attached is a selfie of Hadley through a full-length mirror. She’s wearing a dangerously short skirt with another cropped sweater that sits just under the soft skin at the bottom of her breasts, showing a sliver of skin that has my heart racing. A pair of the sexiest red heels I have ever seen finishes off the outfit. I groan, my cock threatening to burst through my trousers. Images of those heels behind my neck with my face buried between her thighs, my tongue lapping up her arousal, flood my brain.

FUCK.

Connor:

You look sinful, a mhuirnín.
