Jen knows that I’m expecting you. She’ll bring you up to my office.

I take in my surroundings as I walk inside, noting how beautiful both the interior and exterior are. High ceilings, modern and clean lines. It looks like it’s been remodeled slightly since I was last here. I wonder if that was Connor’s doing?

Sure enough, I see a woman sitting at the reception desk. She looks up from her computer screen, noticing the case in my hand.

“Hadley?” she asks, grinning widely.

Smiling, I nod. “Yeah. That’s me.”

“Right this way.” Jen bounces up from behind the desk, her cheeriness a bit overwhelming. She leads me to a set of elevators, which take us to the fifth floor, located on the top level.

The doors open to a beautiful open space, much like the lobby in the waiting area. It’s breathtaking, but looks much more inviting than downstairs. A handful of oversized chairs fill the waiting room, facing the door where a young man sits behind a desk. He looks like he is straight out of college, his youthful face giving away his age. His disheveled, stylish blonde hair looks like he keeps running his fingers through it.

“Jordan, this is Hadley. Mr. Quinn asked that I bring her right in when she got here,” Jen explains to the young man.

“Of course. It’s so nice to meet you, Hadley! He’s just finishing up with a meeting. Give me one moment.” His genuine smile eases some of the anxiousness I was feeling.

Jordan stands and walks to the door off the left, behind his desk. With a light knock, he opens the door.

“She’s here, sir,” he murmurs politely.

“Thanks, Jordan.” I hear Connor’s deep voice from behind the door. “Thank you for the update. Keep me posted on the project status, alright?” His voice is getting closer.

Another voice I recognize is behind the door with him.

Oh, God. Please, not like this.

My pulse is suddenly hammering in my ears, and my breaths are coming in short bursts. This can’t be happening.

The door opens, and sure enough, Andy and Connor emerge from the office. Andy stops dead in his tracks.

“What are you doing here?” His harsh tone is like a dagger, making me flinch.

I attempt to recover quickly, not wanting anyone to see the effect his words have on me.

“I’m here to see Connor, actually,” I reply dryly, masking my hurt.

“Mo stór!” Connor walks past Andy, oblivious to the scene before him, and wraps his arms around me.

I melt into him without realizing it, finding instant comfort in his embrace.

“Mr. James, this is Hadley, my girlfriend.”

“Yeah, I’m familiar,” Andy snarls, shooting a dark glare my way. “She’s my wife.”

Well, shit.

Chapter Thirteen

CONNOR

“This is Andy?” I look at the man I’ve always referred to as Mr. James with a raised brow.

Hadley nods cautiously. “I didn’t realize you worked at the same company until I pulled up here. I’ve only been here once, and Andy doesn’t really share anything about work with me.”

She’s fighting to keep a mask in place, but I can see the wariness in her eyes. The bodach doesn’t seem to fucking notice.

“Mo stór, it’s okay.” I give her a quick reassuring squeeze before releasing her from my embrace.
