I debate for a moment telling her about Andy’s visit. Deciding I don’t want him to blindside her, I shoot off another text.

Connor:

Andy stopped by my office today asking if I had seen you. He said you’ve been missing since Friday. He knows I’ve seen you. Just keep an eye out, mo ghrá.

I need to get back to work. I’ll call you later, beautiful.

A Mhuirnín:

Thank you for letting me know, baby. I’ll talk to you soon.

Chapter Sixteen

HADLEY

Coming home on Monday morning was surreal. My body was deliciously sore from the workout Connor gave me over the weekend.

Now I’m in the home I share with my husband. But do I really share it with him anymore? I haven’t heard anything from Andy since I left him at Providence on Friday. When Connor told me he came to him, I actually snorted. Who does he think he is, acting like the victim now? Annoyance and anger flicker just below the surface, making me wish I knew what he’s thinking.

What is his plan here? Does he really care where I am?

Tuesday has come and gone in a flash. I love spending the day with the kids; they’re all so smart, and it fills my heart to be a part of their learning. Even though I’m only subbing for now, it still feels like I’m making a small difference. Pride fills my chest as I think about how much I love being in the classroom, and I’m so grateful I was able to go back into teaching.

Walking out of the school, I see some stragglers on the playground. I wave at the kids and their parents as I makemy way to my car. I’ve texted Connor on each break, but unfortunately, we kept missing each other. I miss him so much, and I’m looking forward to seeing him tonight.

My phone rings as soon as I get buckled in my seat. I smile when I see his name and press the green accept button to take the call.

“Hey, baby! I’ve missed you today!”

“Mo ghrá, it’s so good to hear your voice.” His voice is gruff.

“Babe, what’s wrong?”

“It’s just been a day. We’ve had some contract issues. Nothing I can’t take care of.” He’s silent for a moment.

“If you need to cancel tonight, it’s okay,” I reassure him.

I may hate that I haven’t been with him in twenty-four hours, but I know his job is pretty damn important.

“I’m so sorry, love. I don’t want to.” The frustration is apparent in his voice.

“Baby, really, it’s okay. I’ll call Kat and Ryan and hang out with them tonight.”

“I’ll make this up to you, I promise.”

I smile at his declaration.

“Call me when you make it home?” he asks. “No matter the time.”

“Of course. I’ll talk to you later, baby.”

“Mo ghrá.”

I haven’t figured that one out yet, but he also hasn’t translated. I’m too nervous to ask.

We hang up, and I send out a message in the group text.
