Do you two want to go out for dinner tonight?

Ryan:

Oh, we’re good enough for her now. LOL.

Kat:

I’m in! We miss you!

At that, I smile. I’ve missed them too. Even if the orgasms are unbelievable, I need my best friends too. It’s been way too long since we’ve had a girls’ night.

Two hours later, the three of us are sitting around a table at our favorite dive bar, Finley’s. The table is cluttered with every appetizer on the menu and our second round of drinks.

I’m mid-sip of my screwdriver when Kat announces, “I think I’m going to sleep with Clay.”

Ryan and I share a knowing look.

“The owner of your gym, Clay?” Ryan’s question is filled with amusement.

“Yep. He’s been hinting that he wants to take me out for months and, well, I think I’m going to sleep with him,” Kat declares confidently.

“It’s about damn time, woman!” Ryan and I say at the same time.

She looks back at us, startled.

“Seriously? Am I that obvious?” Her tone is light with amusement.

“Listen, babes, Had and I have been waiting for you to take the plunge for a while. He’s a good place to start.” Ryan pauses thoughtfully. “I know Anya fucked you up, but it’s been a long-ass time for you to not be interested in anyone. If you’re attracted to him, get that dick, Pickle!” Her voice rises with her growing excitement.

Kat is mortified, her face a bright shade of crimson I’ve never seen outside of Saturday morning cartoons.

“On that note, I think we’ve had enough to drink.” I giggle and grab the check the server laid on our table a few moments ago, pulling out my credit card to pay the bill.

I walk out to the parking lot with Kat and Ryan, and we stand by our cars and chat for a little longer. Once the three of us get together, it’s difficult to separate us. These girls are the sisters I always wanted.

Eventually, we say our goodbyes, and I climb into my car. Thankfully the drive home is short. I park in the driveway, pulling out my phone before I open the door to send a quick message to Connor.

Hadley:

I just got home, baby.

I put my phone away, not expecting a response immediately with how stressed he sounded earlier, then step out of my car and walk toward the door.

I go to put the key in the lock when I realize the light is on inside. I didn’t leave that on, did I?

Not thinking any more of it, I push my key in the lock and turn it, letting myself in. I step inside, locking the door behind me. I take a few steps into the foyer when I hear music coming from the kitchen.

What the fuck?

Fear courses through my body, and I grab the first thing I can find, an umbrella which was left on the entryway table. Taking the last few cautious steps into the kitchen, I feel like I’ve stepped back in time.

“Hey, Had.” Andy’s voice snaps me back to reality.

“Why are you here?” The question is out before I can stop it.

“I miss you. I thought I’d stay home for a bit.” He smiles at me, but I can see the mask he’s trying to hide behind. “So, where were you tonight?”

“None of your fucking business.” I spit his words back to him from Friday night, my fear having disappeared and anger now taking its place.
