“I actually don’t.”

It’s her turn to show skepticism.

“I don’t. I’m not your brother or Xander. I’m not saying I’m falling in love or boyfriend material. I’ve done my fair share of fucking around but I don’t fuck like I have a quota to meet like Xander does.” The last part isn’t really fair to my friend but it comes out anyway. Probably because I don’t like the idea of her hooking up with him. I’m trying to dissuade her from it if I’m honest.

“Maybe that’s a good thing too.” She shrugs.

“Good how?”

“Maybe you’re actually good at it.” Her eyes drift to my lips.

“And Xander isn’t?”

“I don’t know. Doesn’t matter if I can’t get him to the point he wants to try with me, does it?” Her voice is softer suddenly, a hint of huskiness to it as her eyes lift slowly to meet mine. “But you said you’d bite.”

“If you weren’t his—” I don’t get to finish the sentence because her lips are on mine.

Whatever Madison misses in experience, she makes up for in enthusiasm. Kissing me like she wants me. Like I could just as easily be Xander. Her hands slip on to my shoulders and her fingers curl over them as her lips brush over mine. It’s soft and tentative at first, seeking like she’s just testing the water to see if she really wants to be doing this.

But she must, because a moment later it’s deeper and I can taste whatever candy she’d been eating in the car on the way here mixed with her Chapstick—tropical like coconut and lime, and it makes me want more of her. So I do the stupid thing—I kiss her back.

I run my tongue over her lower lip and tangle it with hers, tasting her the same way she is me. Lost in the way her fingers play over my traps. I grab her and pull her closer. I let my hands run down her sides and over her hips, using my tongue to trace over hers. My heart is pounding in my chest and I can’t remember the last time a kiss—just a kiss—felt like this.

When we break to catch our breath we don’t move away from each other, both of us still dazed and me more than a little confused. I’m still caught off guard she’d kiss me like she wanted me.

“And?” she asks.

“And?” I repeat, staring at the way her lips are pink and a little swollen from the way she’d kissed me.

“Is it okay?”

Right. She was getting my opinion. That’d been the reason for the heroic effort.

“Yeah. It’s not bad.” I lift my shoulder, trying to keep my cool because in reality I want to kiss her again.

“Not bad? I thought it was pretty good. You’re pretty good at it.” She grins and her eyes are bright with amusement.

“I’m not the one being graded, Madness.”

“You never know. You might benefit from some critical feedback yourself.”

I raise my brow at her but she just smirks in return.

“I thought you wanted my help.”

“I thought you weren’t willing to give it.”

“Maybe you just convinced me you need it. Desperately.” I smirk back at her.

She punches my shoulder and raises her brow at me in threat.

“Ow!”

“If you’re going to help me, you need to be nice about it.”

“If you put my throwing arm out of commission I won’t be helping anyone.”

“Sorry.” She has the decency to look remorseful and she rubs her fingers over the spot where she hit me. “Want me to kiss it better?” She gives me a wry grin.
