I stare at my phone, willing some sort of message to pop through and let me know how things went tonight. Quentin had his date with the local woman Bea set him up with. They went to dinner, and it’s already nine o’clock, and I still haven’t heard a word. It has me starting to wonder if dinner turned into drinks at someone’s place, and the little swell of anxiety I have over that doesn’t bode well for me.

Suddenly the phone rings though and it’s Quentin’s name flashing across the screen. I stare at it for a moment. I was expecting a text, not a call, but I answer it anyway.

“Hello?”

“Will your brother kill me if I park in his driveway?”

“What?”

“Will Easton lose his shit if I park out here?”

“Out where? Here?” I walk to the window and look out of it,watching as Quentin gets out of his truck and starts down the driveway toward the cottage.

“Yes, I’m here.”

“What are you doing here? You’re supposed to be on a date.”

“It ended early.”

“Early? It’s late.”

“She was late. It ended early. I wanted the dessert for two, she didn’t. So I’m here now.” I see him smiling to himself as he keeps walking.

“I don’t understand what that has to do with me?”

“Someone has to share the dessert with me.”

A moment later there’s a knock on my door, and I let him in, looking at him skeptically.

“You lied to me.” He raises his brow at me, and a stormy look forms.

“Lied to you how?”

“She definitely didn’t know we were being set up to fake date. She thought it was a real date.”

“I mean, it was supposed to be a blind date. I told you that I told her you liked her and were interested.”

“In fake dating her, not in real dating her.”

“Oh my god. Please tell me you didn’t tell her that.”

“She asked me how things were going with adjusting to being here, and I explained that I’m trying hard to fit in. The team and my PR person are helping and made a little joke about how she would know that. She was like ‘what do you mean?’ And I said, ‘Well, us being set up like this.’ She looked hurt and asked if I was interested in her or not. I panicked and just said I was thrilled to meet someone new in the city.”

“Thrilled to meet someone new in the city?” I take the bag from him and set it on the table, pulling out the container.

“I don’t know. I was trying to think of a euphemism for being set up by your PR agent.”

“She’s not a celebrity, Quentin. She’s just a local with a lot ofconnections. She doesn’t have a PR agent. You were supposed to treat her like a person.”

“I did. I took her somewhere nice. I pulled out her chair. I ordered the wine. All the things you said.”

“But apparently, you don’t know how to talk to women. No wonder you’re single.” I set two forks out on the table.

“I know how to talk to women. I just don’t know how to talk to weird professional setup situationships.”

“You guys didn’t even make it to situationship status it sounds like.” I laugh to myself.

“Oh no, she still asked me to go back to her place for dessert, and when I declined, that’s when I got left alone. Hence you eating it with me.”
