It wasn’t Aiden.

It was a man she’d last seen on a horse in a field, looking terrified as she drove a truck to freedom. He was hauling a horse trailer. It was the same make and model as the one she’d destroyed.

“What is happening?” she asked him.

“Goldie Abbott?”

She nodded once. Had they brought her a horse? What was she going to do with a horse?

She eyed her garage speculatively but shook that crazy thought off.

He opened the end and revealed a long table, chairs, ottomans, the hutch, and a dozen more pieces of furniture packed among rough horse blankets.

“Holy shit,” she said, staring at a fortune in wood and feeling her heart break all over again.

“He said you were expecting it,” the man said hesitantly.

She nodded once.

“He also said you could unload it.”

She nodded again. She got one goodbye gift and turned into a bobblehead.

He was well and truly done with her.

“Oh yeah, he said to give you this,” the man said, holding out a wrapped package that was suspiciously book-shaped.

“I don’t want it.”

“Okay.” He shrugged and turned away.

“I want it.”

She snatched it out of his hands and unwrapped the plain paper to revealWhite Fang.

A whisper of a smile passed over her face. “I had to fall for a writer.”

This couldn’t be the book from his study that was the key to the staircase, but of course, he had another copy. She opened the front jacket to see it was a first edition. She didn’t know much about the book market, but it was published in 1906, and famous books from that era usually went for around $1000. She was holding a thousand dollars in her hand. Maybe she should have taken the books.

She sniffed and was surprised to realize she was crying.

“How is he?” she asked abruptly.

The man looked grave.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, clutching the book to her chest.

He wouldn’t meet her eyes.

“What’s happened?” she demanded.

“Nathan is alpha.”

“He can’t be. He doesn’t have a strong enough wolf.”

“They’ve locked up Aiden in his house. Says he can’t ever leave. Says he’s a menace to the world.”

“They can’t keep him there forever.”
